On tap at the brewery in downtown Champaign. Using Norwegian Kviek yeast and aged in Buffalo Trace barrels for 10 months.
A: Pours a near opaque black color. A dense tan head rises to a little over a finger. Tons of lace is left behind.
S: Dark bakers chocolate up front. Black liquorice and molasses. Vanilla, dark fruits of cherries, plums and raisins. Wood and lots of fusel alcohol that gives this a harsh edge.
T: Like the nose, tons going on here. From Dark bakers chocolate, dark fruits, and liquorice. Lots of sweetness. To a big roast and charred bitterness lingering. Vanilla, wood, and a huge fusel alcohol bite. All together, this is pretty over the top.
M/O: A big full body with moderate carbonation. Sticky, thick, and chewy. Really viscous. This is all over the place, and to much going on to really enjoy. The fusel like alcohol character makes this more of a chore to drink.
I get what they were going for here. This is a big barrel aged stout in the vain of The Bruery. Though with that comes huge alcohol, a diabetes level of sweetness, and something I just don't personally want to come back to. I love the Blind Pig, and think they made exactly what they wanted (they have made excellent barrel aged beers before, but in the 9-10% range, which is my personal sweet spot for the style). Just not something I can give high marks to if I can't enjoy at least one snifter.
