Brewed on the same day that a fire ravaged the Rochefort Abbey (December 29, 2010), hence the name.
Two dense fingers of slightly tan froth atop a muddy mahogany body; good lacing and duration give Spooky Coincidence a strong, nice look. Decent aromas of biscuit malt, some sweet and dried fruit (orange peel, berry, raisin), but the nose is a bit too subtle.
Sweet, fruity taste, lots of berry, and it's certainly sugary with a molasses hint. Ample biscuit malt. The advertised Westmalle yeast adds good balance. It's a solid, flavorful Dubbel that could use a bit bolder flavor, a bit more fruit, and this could be a result of the Westmalle yeast, which is a bit less fruity than its Belgian compatriots. Still, this is nice, smooth, and creamy, providing a good, solid mouthfeel. It certainly is easy on the palate, making this an easy beer to consume.
Spooky Coincidence is just that, and doesn't quite measure up to the great Rochefort beers (#'s 6, 8, and 10), but then again, few do. This is a good, straightforward Dubbel in the fine Belgian tradition. I for one would like to see a bolder fruit flavor, but I also wonder what a little age would do with Spooky Coincidence.
Well worth a go.
