My sister brought this back to the states from a three-month stay with her husband's family in Brazil. I don't think that's coloring my perception, but who can really say?

Poured into a stemmed tulip: Dark brown with plummy highlights, nice finger of mocha head at first that drops in a few minutes.

Really nice smell: starts off with a crisp cracky note, a little bready, then develops a really nicely nutty coffee note with a little cocoa, even a little cola in there. Reminds me more of a really malty brown ale. Smells like a mash at one point.

More hoppy & crisp than the nose would let on, though it's not real bitter, just has a good, dry snap to it. Still get the bread crust, some cocoa again, & a dry cola taste, like diet.

Pretty brisk & active on the tongue, not harsh but gives you a good scrub & finishes up fairly clean.

Gotta say, I was kind of preparing for this to be on the lousy side & was really pleasantly surprised. Can't really say I've had any beers of note from anywhere south of the border, but this was pretty impressive.

Brown ruby color with a thick head with good retention and leaving some laces.
Light initial grainy aroma followed by notes of coffee and roasted malts.
Flavor of roasted malts with herbal hops. Predominant taste of coffee and caramel.
Light to medium body with medium carbonation.
Good dunkel, good flavor with high drinkability, though it could be a bit less sweet. Better than its blondy sister.

This excellent beer is a perfect Dunkel Style and got the GOLD MEDAL in the III BBA - Brazilian Beer Award (Concurso Brasileiro de Cerveja) promoted by ABRADEG - Brazilian Beer Consumer Association.

In Gramado's city you can find it in the Tap version, and it's also excellent.

This is a really dark brown colored beer with brown hues. The head has a lightly tanned color, forms thick on top, and has holds good retention. The nose is a surprise for me. It goes into a mocha state of aroma, tagged along by caramel.

An even bigger surprise is the flavor and the coating mouthfeel this beer gives. The beer´s flavor starts coffeeish, then light amounts of baker´s and bitter chocolate come in to play, a brush of coffee cream, giving this beer a taste I like a lot. It´s beefy in flavor and mouthfeel for a 4.8% ABV beer.

This could be my biggest surprise of my third trip to Brazil. What a treat!

(Served in a strange)
600 ml bottle
validoate: 20/02/2012

A- This beer pours a dense brown body with a garnet glow and a sticky light beige head that last as a thin ring and sticks to the glass a bit before gliding back to the beer.

S- The coffee malt aroma is lagered with a fresh brown malt grain note to follow. There is a light geosmin hint in the finish.

T- The brown malt flavor has a coffee roasted malt hint to follow and a soft tang that shows up aswell. The flavor is clean and well lagered wit a soft hop tartness in the finish that is light but turns to a bitter hint that lingers. The malt flavor takes on lots of depth as the beer opens with coconut and dry caramel characters that are more wood like that sweet flavors.

M- The medium-light mouthfeel has a crisp finish with no alcohol heat noticed.

O- This is a nice schwarzbier that is easy drinking and has lots of nice subtle character.
