German-style refillable growler filled at Maplewood on 3/20/04, enjoyed on 3/21/04.
First imperial pint glass pours with a nice tall (>1") head, which is very fluffy and airy, similar to what you see on cask-conditioned ale presentations. Settles within a minute or two to a small layer of foam on the brew, which disappoints a bit. Color should be shown in the dictionary as the definition of amber. Slight malty aroma, with a sharpness of hops somewhat dominant. Taste is of medium malts, caramel seeming to be prominent, with bitterness sharpening the edges of the malt smoothness. As I find with the lighter-shaded Maplewood brews, a bit thin in the flavor, but as noted before in my reviews of some their other brews, that makes the drinkability even that much more so.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub.
This amber ale poured a clear, amber red color with white foam that settled but coated the glass. The smell was malty, but faint. The taste was slightly sweet malt with hints of caramel, bitter hops, oak, nuts, and butter. Nice flavor, but a little thin. The mouthfeel was smooth with medium body and low carbonation. The aftertaste was pleasant. This was a good drinking amber ale.
