A: A nice black color with about a finger of slightly beige head. Ruby red when held to the light. Great retention and lacing.
S: A little bit roasty and coffeeish. Just a touch of tropical hops. Not really that noticeable if you weren't looking for them though.
T: Once again the roast comes through as the most dominant flavor but its not a bitter roast like in a stout. I'm thinking some carafa. A little bit of hop flavor comes through as the beer warms but I wouldn't say by any means the hops are pungent or even that noticeable really. When they appear they bring forwards a bit of pineapple and pine. They are very very subtle however. Alcohol is very well hidden and I could easily believe this was 6%.
M: One of the better aspects of the beer. Creamy but still dry. Carbonation is appropriate.
O: A good beer but not really a black IPA imo. Faaaar to many brewers seem to focus of building a roast character and letting the hops take a back seat. It should be the complete reverse IMO. I would probably not have even guessed this was a black IPA if it wasn't labeled as so none the less not bad just stylistically poor. Maybe too old a bottle and hops were faded ?

Bottle: Poured a dark black color ale with a nice light brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of some roasted malt with light grapefruit hoppy notes. Taste is also dominated by some grapefruit hoppy notes with some dry bitter roasted malt. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Not one of my favorite style but enjoyable nonetheless.
