Laboratory Brewing Company, The

The Laboratory Brewing Co., aka The Lab, has undergone many changes in the few years it was open. Several brewers have produced a few decent beers, but each time a brewer would change, the quality of the various standards such as the Javelina Hefe Weizen, would change dramatically.

The atmosphere and the clientele also has changed over the years depending on the entertainment options. Once it was a swing band and dance place that attracted many young people that weren't particularly concerned with the quality of the beer. Before it closed, it was catch as catch can on audience and music, but with the exception of a decent porter, the beer stayed pedestrian for an audience that went for lighter tastes.

The Lab is now under new ownership and closed for remodeling, to open perhaps later this summer or in the fall. Last time I drove by (early May 2003), the place was gutted, but the brewing equipment was sitting outside and not hauled off. We can only hope the latest incarnation will be a good thing for beer lovers.
