The original Los Diablos Del Paso was a super bitter West Coast IPA that clocked in at 7.5%, brewed Nov. 2005. This barrel has been aged on oak chips since, and according to brewer Corey Blodgett, has dried out enough that it's probably closer to 8% now. I had a few pints at the roadhouse last Wed., when they first tapped it, and enjoyed it so much that I brought home this 2 liter jug, which I shared with some friends tonight.
The color is a hazy light orange, with a small, off-white collar and skim.
The aroma is pretty strong, a soft sweet fruitiness, with tangerine smelling citrus like hops, that are strong but not pungent. Perfect!
The taste is just phenomenal. This is the best of English IPAs in terms of balance between the malt and hops, but richer, with a nice vanilla/bourbon oak character (in spite of the fact that these were virgin American oak chips). The bitterness is really in the back seat to the fruity yeast and hops notes, but keeps it light and not to sugary, which just enough pungency to make your mouth pucker. Enough booziness to you know your not wasting your time, but not so much to dominate. Wow!
The mouthfeel is pretty light, especially for the strength. Very nice.
This beer is the shit, so of course it disappears way to fast. Like the best things in life, you really miss it most once it gone. Drink some if you still can!
