Taste: Mellow grain, hint of hop, odd aftertaste. Slight malt grain nose. Gold, crystal clear, with a white head that dissipates leaving some broken ring lattice. Light body.

Picked this up at Aldi where everything is on the cheap. This appears to be brewed in Rochester, NY. Popping the top I get a big adjunct waft of corn with some sweetness. Pours to a light golden with a creamy light head. On the taste this brew is a little bit of sweetness up front that stays throughout. Not much hop flavor noted at all basically an adjunct malt. No aftertaste. Super clean finish. Looks like a great hot weather brew. For what it is, it is exactly what I expected.

Although the color is a very bright gold, it's still darker than your average light beer, and there is some strong carbonation, which leads to nice head that's retained for a very decent amount of time. The nose is not quite skunky, but it's not attractive, either. Sort of like they worked hard to make sure there was at least some smell, so it's a strange malty explosion in your nose with a hint of hops. The taste is more bland than unappealing or off-putting. Still, there's a bit more body and hop character than many light lagers. The carbonation you see is very apparent in the mouthfeel, giving the beer something of a sharp feel. Still, that seems to do a good job clearing out the slick/oily/filmy back end that wants to hang around. Not a stellar beer I'd seek out by any means, but probably no worse than most light macros, and at under five bucks a sixer, I wouldn't judge anybody for picking up some Merit Light.

Merit Light is a typical American light beer. It pours a crystal clear straw gold body beneath an initial head of fluffy bright white foam that steadily drops to a thin cap, and then just a collar. The lacing is slightly better than the head retention, leaving short mountains of lace with each sip.

The nose is clean, but lacking, offering a mild note of generic "beer" that combines a light bit of malt with a smear of non-descript hops.

As might be expected, the flavor is pretty much what the aroma suggests it will be but with a surprising touch of lightly herbal and spicy hops that come in midway and linger into the short finish. It's backed by a firm bitterness, and perfectly balanced to finish dry and crisp.

Light bodied and delicately zesty in the mouth, Merit Light is a well-made, refreshing light lager.
