Drank on-tap at The Skellig, Waltham, MA
Served in a pint glass
Poured from a nitro-tap, the beer was initially turbulent but soon revealed a crystal clear, crimson-amber body. A smooth, creamy and foamy, bright white head topped the liquid. The head was very slow to fade and deposited a latticework of lacing all down the glass.
The aroma was quite mild. Powdery and dry. Touch of malty sweetness. Not much else going on.
The flavor was mellow but interesting enough to keep my attention. Biscuity malts appeared on the front end. A crisp, dry, powdery yeastiness came through in the center. The finish was surprisingly hoppy. Earthy, dry and quite bitter for the style.
The mouthfeel was par for the course. Medium bodied with a very fine and mild carbonation.
Skellig Irish Red is a well crafted beer that can only be found at The Skellig pub in downtown Waltham. If you happen to be in the neighborhood, this is worth a try.
