Black Knight is a perfectly balanced hybrid stout/ruby porter that even pale ale fans can enjoy. Lightly toasted German malts dance on top of the finest English Maris Otter barley malts to create this creamy and sweet dark ale. Carefully selected Goldings hops grown locally by Brook House Farm, Bromyard complete Black Knight with gentle and delicate honey aromas.

500ml bottle.
L: Black with a mocha head that starts big but collapses quickly to a cap and a few smears of lacing.
S: Warm and roasty and delicate.
T: Coffee, raisin and brazil nut. Not bad but could do with more oomph
F: Medium/light body with an extra smooth mouthfeel, a tingle of carbonation and a dry-ish finish.
O: An easy-drinking English stout but not a stand-out. Looks okay and mouthfeel is good but flavour and aroma are both muted. Maybe better on cask than bottled?

Poured from a 500ml bottle into a dimpled pint mug (and then part poured into my stew!)

Pours a dark black colour, with a decent off-white head.

Smells quite rich and dark.

Tastes dark and malty - fairly bittersweet and rather dry, with some alcohol mixed in with dark, rich fruits.

Overall a decent enough stout.

Hand pulled half pint at The Cock Hotel, Wellington: a well known real ale pub in Shropshire.

Lovely dark body, almost jet black: on top a thin head of tan coloured foam, the head staying as it left lacing down the glass.

Sweet chestnuts roasting over an open fire? Well almost, it did have a roasted nutlike aroma with some dark chocolate stirred in.

The taste was a good blend of flavours, that dark chocolate again, some liquorice and malty molasses, all very slightly smoked. Not a sweet stout, but although it had a dry finish you wouldn’t call it a bitter stout either, an in between one then!

Body could have been richer and deeper, but at 4.5% ABV it held its own, just.

A pleasant night cap on the evening it was reviewed, not sure I’d have a session on it though.
