RRBC's light beer. A high-quality alternative to commercially bought "barley pop." Based on the original recipe for Tallgrass Gold, Tallgrass Light is made most quaffable by the addition of rice as a fermentable source.

Tallgrass Light will run the anchor leg for the city lagers in the '(One Time Only) Greater Des Moines Light Lager Face-Off'. I've always thought that Raccoon River B.C. beer is inconsistent, but is roughly on par with Court Avenue beer. Both brewpubs are capable of surprises (in both directions), depending on the style. Let's see which one wins the competition within the competition.
Pristine pale amber topped by a slim cap of pure white that was probaby the most transient of all the lids and deposited the least amount of lace. I loved the diamond-like clarity, though.
The nose's power wasn't bad (still somewhat lacking), but it contained an off-aroma that I didn't fully appreciate until I went back to it after drinking a few ounces. Thankfully, it was unable to get into too much trouble by virtue of its weakness.
Tallgrass Light is the clear loser of this competition for one simple reason: acetaldehyde. I've tasted that 'freshly cut green apple' tartness in a few other Raccoon River beers, but it was way too obvious here because of the style. There just wasn't enough malt and hop flavor to cover it up adequately. Although I could appreciate that typical light lager graininess underneath it all, it had no chance to save the flavor profile.
The mouthfeel was light to the point of aqueousness and didn't help itself by having too few bubbles. More carbonation *might* have distracted me enough to earn an average score.
Tallgrass Light needs to clean up its act before I'd ever consider ordering it again. In fact, all of these light lagers have some work to do, except for the winner. So ends the '(One Time Only) Greater Des Moines Light Lager Face-Off'. This was an interesting and informative undertaking, but I'm glad it's 'One Time Only'.

Your typical group-pitcher kinda beer. A touch above domestic macros with a tang of craftbrew flavor. Certainly not very complex, but easy to drink with a delicate malt and hop character. Light in body with a crisp mouthfeel and mild carbonation. Pale golden in color with a thin white head and minimal retention or lacing.
