Polished brick orange with amber highlights. The small head was somewhere between cream and ecru in color and didn't last all that long. Within minutes, it was down to a barely covering surface film with a decent amount of smeary lace on the glass. Pretty typical for a bar pour.
While the nose was relatively weak, I could easily appreciate pumpkin and spices. It was nicely balanced and had that true pumpkin pie aroma that seems to elude most brewers of pumpkin ales. More vividness would have easily earned it the next highest score.
I've had a double handful of pumpkin ales now, but this is the first one to taste like pumpkin pie... with whipped cream on top! I don't know if it was purposeful or not, but I can't believe no one has thought of this variation. The first sip brought the unmistakable flavor of vanilla to my palate, along with the typical flavors that one usually associates with beer of this style. The combination was nothing less than the beer equivalent of a Cool Whip-smothered wedge of pie, fresh from the oven.
As in the nose, it was easy to appreciate pumpkin, nutmeg and cinnamon. I wish they had been bolder though. Strangely enough, flavor intensity seemed to decrease the deeper into the glass I got. The fault, I believe, was with the mouthfeel. It was simply too insubstantial to hold the flavor on the palate longer than a fleeting moment or two.
Raccoon River has either stumbled upon or has come up with a great variation on the classic pumpkin ale... adding vanilla for that whipped cream topping touch. It's too bad they couldn't pull off the full monty by giving the beer some malty guts and a bolder pumpkininess. It was a pleasant enough pint, but it could have been groundbreaking.

Slightly hazy, gold-brown hue, very small white head, poor retention, and no lace. Limited nose, served too cold, faint maltÂ… pumpkin? The palate is like soft pumpkin bars (typical spiciness). No bitterness. Soft creamy mouthfeel, medium-light body, thin. Light carbonation. Once it warms the beer becomes better. All in all, this is a mellow pumpkin ale, nice. It has both faults and charm, worth having one or two.
