Murky dark gold with a small splash of orange juice. The one finger ivory crown faded to a smeary, broken film over several minute's time and left more lace than anticipated. A solid collar was present on the opposite side of the glass for the life of the pint.

The nose was a minor disappointment because it was low on power and didn't smell much like a hefe weizen. My notes say only 'sweet', 'golden fruity' and 'no spice'. Once I got into the bottom half of the pint, I could appreciate a little soft banana.

One gulp is all it took to tell me that not only is Overland Vice a hefe weizen, but a kick-ass hefe weizen at that. Sugared banana esters practically exploded over my mouth and tongue, leading to one of the highest banan-o-meter scores that I've ever granted: 4.5/5.0. Ground clove was present, but was relegated to being a backseat driver.

The flavor was a near perfect mix of ripe banana puree, warm clove, biscuity pale malt, lush wheat malt and alcohol. Far from being a deal breaker, the background alcohol made the beer taste midway between a standard hefe and a double hefe. I'd guess the ABV to be bumping up against the state minimum. At least.

This is one of those cases where my ideal flavor score is midway between two numbers. I've decided to chose the lower one and use the drinkability score to massage the total upward. Not that the drinkability score isn't deserved on its own.

The mouthfeel was medium for the style and finished with more than a trace of mouthcoating stickiness. I liked the way it allowed the flavor to linger until the next sip. The gentle feel of the carbonation was right up my alley and was another reason why the drinkability score was well-earned.

Overland Vice (why not Weiss?) is one of the best Raccoon River offerings that I've ever had. In fact, I'd put it right up there with El Bandito Loco... which is on-tap at the moment as well. Just when I begin to lose my enthusiasm for this place, they go and surprise me with something delicious.
