Some friends we met in Zurich told me that if I liked beer, I should check out Steinfels. It's the only real brewpub in the city. We decided to check it out on a Saturday night. You have to take the train out to Escher Wyss Platz, which is a bit outside the city. Maybe not the nicest part of Zurich we saw. It's the nightlife center of the universe for every drunken teenager in Zurich. Kinda scary walking around this neighborhood. The brewpub is located inside the Abaton Cinema complex. When you walk in, it looks like a casino from another planet. The major color is orange, and all of the furniture is very retro and/or futuristic. Eighties pop music blaring all night as 16-18 year olds (drinking age in CH) drank along side us. Probably the most unique, odd, and memorable atmosphere for a brewpub that I have been at in a while. Service was good, even though strangely there was only one waitress and one manager serving the whole bar. I could see other patrons getting angry at the wait for a drink. They brew fours beers here. You can see the brew tanks behind glass near the bar. They make a Pils, Lager, Wheat, and a Seasonal. I had the Wheat which was good and the Seasonal "Fall" beer which was an excellent dark ale. If this place was downtown, I would have spend more time here. But the shady area dictated that we only stay for two and try to get out of there before midnight.
