Introducing the 5th installment and 4th chapter of our award winning Lovecraft series: The White Ship White IPA. H.P. Lovecraft’s, The White Ship, tells a story of a lighthouse keeper’s adventure aboard a mysterious ship where his curiosity and greed win out over his better judgment.
The label, designed by local Rhode Island artist Pete McPhee from Swamp Yankee, features an image of the story’s grey lighthouse as the north point of a compass rose and represents the narrator’s trip to the other world and back.
White Ship White IPA is a Belgian style IPA is brewed with 4 types of Belgian and American malts and creamy Belgian yeast to create a crisp, delicious beer that blurs style guidelines. We use El Dorado and Mandarina Bavarian hops to give the beer the slight tangerine notes. We then dry hop this adventurous brew with El Dorado hops to enhance the mild citrus aromatics.
This mildly fruity IPA pairs perfectly with citrus fruits and fresh herbs such as cilantro making this beer the perfect accompaniment for Mexican foods. The big flavorful hops also balance out rich, salty, fatty foods like pork belly.
Ingredients: Belgian and American Malts, Belgian Yeast, El Dorado and Mandarina Hops, Water.
IBUs: 50

From a can: pours a cloudy/hazy light yellow golden color with fizzy white head. Citrus, wheat, light fruits, and some cereal on the nose; follows onto the palate. Medium bodied. Finishes with sweet light fruit notes.

Cloudy enough to create a strong white tone to the greenish, dirty gold color. Modest head, but a good latticed lace on the glass.
I don't get the usual yeasty smell of typical Belgian beers. It smells pretty good, but much more like an American Pale Ale than a Belgian one. Good pale malt base--a bit like toast. Light floral hop nose.
Highly carbonated with a leaner body. I do get a bit of yeast bite in the swallow. The hop is mild, so the aftertaste, while dry, the bitterness comes strictly from the yeast. The base malt is muted. Overall, a weak entry.

A: Pours a lightly cloudy golden yellow color with 2 fingers of head that fades down to a nice cap
S: Not all that much going on. Some light fruitiness with a muddled wheat undertone and some yeast. Lightly floral as well
T: Follows the nose. Starts off with a bit of muddled wheat, spice, and fruit notes, followed by a light floral hoppiness. Finishes with lingering spices
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Lightly chalky
O: A bit of a mess. The nose is very light and the taste is a muddled grouping of flavors that somewhat resemble a Belgian ale and a floral IPA. Easy to drink, but that might be the only redeeming quality after the lack of aroma

Narragansett Brewing Co. "Lovecraft White IPA"
16 fl. oz. can, production coded but without freshness dating
$2.79 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Well, what to say about this? H.P. Lovecraft was born in, and lived in Providence, RI and thusly Naragansett is honoring him with a line of beers, which is great. His story in itself is pretty interesting, never having made any real money writing horror stories, but eventually marrying an older woman who'd support him only to have the rug pulled out from under him when she lost all of her money and fell ill, followed by him eventually dying penniless at just 46 years of age. His works, however, are probably more interesting; although his seemingly central theme of nihilism probably ties very directly back into his own life.
The story of "The White Ship" is very floral in many ways, particularly the names of places and characters, and I can see how that's a very good connection to this beer.
It's a very hazy, almost cloudy golden-orange beneath a frothy head of bright white that settles into a creamy surface covering and holds well. Beautiful rings of jeweled lace are left about the glass.
Multiple flowers greet you in the nose without becoming perfumey, along with a delicate orange zest, and it's really quite intriguing. I don't know that I've ever experienced a beer that's been quite as floral without having had anything beyond hops added.
The flavor follows, offering a gently sweet and grainy malt, and some mild red fruitiness from the yeast, but mainly floral and orange-like hops. There's also some chalkiness and a delicate spiciness with a touch of black (or white?) pepper from the yeast. It's not particularly bitter, and I'm assuming they've labeled it as a "white IPA" due to its strength at 6.8% ABV.
The body is medium, leaning heavily towards medium-light, and it's softly zesty across the palate.
What I thought might have been a simple ale has turned out to be much more complex with its combination of floral, citrusy, and spicy notes. "The White Ship" was to a certain extent about enlightenment, and I think an open mind and careful evaluation are in order for this one.

A thanks to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16 oz. can. Has a cloudy golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of citrus, malts. Taste is citrus, malts, spices, some metallic notes at the finish. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer, but nothing special.

-Lovecraft white ale. in spiegealau ipa glass.
A: Bright orange color, dense hazy nature, foamy dull white head. Quick pace of effervesce, medium-heavy in density, with a head that holds rather well. A thick milky coating for lace.
A: Aroma of lemon and white pepper, lightly tart oranges. Light dried greenery, pale malts with a spiciness that is rather restrained. Oranges are prominent on the trail.
T: The flavor was bold and spicy, white pepper and sour lemon. Tart tangerines, dry yeastiness, bittering. Some sour oranges, dry funk, dried fruit and a big peppery spicing on the finish. Creamy belgian malt base, crackers, and dry citrus rounds things out.
M: Crisp mouthful, bubbuly and creamy texture, noticeable amount of alcohol detection.
O: hoppy white ale, good flavor, spicy, worth a try.

From the can marked 0196-1322:30. Sampled on September 23, 2016.
Pale-yellow and orange pour with a short-lasting white head. Modest clarity.
The aroma brings out a little Belgian breaded malts, and herbal quality, citrus, and a sort of perfume-like character.
Light to medium body.
The taste has a more notable toasted bread note with a rosemary or other bitter herbal bite leading to a lingering, peppery finish. It was not bad but I like my White IPAs to be a little more subtle.
