Games and beer go together like peanut butter and bananas, or like bacon and… more bacon. That’s why we’re teaming up with Bananagrams for Hi-Neighbor! Have a Hefeweizen! for the latest collaboration in ‘Gansett’s “Hi Neighbor Mash-Up” series.

Ten years ago, Rhode Island native Abraham Nathanson was looking for a faster-paced tiled word game to play, and at the young age of 76, he and his family created Bananagrams at their home in Narragansett, Rhode Island.

When we heard that Bananagrams were celebrating their 10th Bananaversary, we needed to create the perfect beer to commemorate the occasion! We started looking for a classic style filled with subtle complexities and bright flavors to match the fast paced and witty spirit of our favorite tiled word game. With mild notes of banana and clove, we felt that a traditional Hefeweizen was definitely the way to go.

Truth be told, we aren’t the best Bananagrammers, and we’re all right with that. A beer or two in, we lose our filter and start spouting profanities like a lobsterman. Much like ourselves, this classic wheat beer is left unfiltered to create the complex, yeast driven character that have made Hefeweizens a popular choice for centuries. For a new take on this classic German style, we brew this beer with El Dorado hops that give it a slight orange aroma and finish.

The subtle notes of orange, banana, and clove make this Hefeweizen the perfect beer to pair with Latin American food such as Venezuelan dishes, and spicy meats. True to its German heritage, pairing this beer with traditional Bavarian cured meats and sausages is a no brainer.

Pours a hazy golden color with a big fluffy white head.

The aroma is big on grains with some ripe banana. Odd metallic note.

The taste is beefy with grain. It's like a beefy macro, not sure if they used wheat. The hefe yeast is weak. Some light banana.

The feel is full and creamy as it should be. Odd metallic taste in the finish.

Usually a solid brewery but they missed big time with the hefe. It's a forgiving style but not with this. Tastes like a macro cream ale.

One of the best domestic brewed versions of this style I've had. Has the right balance of hops and malt, decent fruity esters and light malt without any lemon, thankfully. The pounder (16 ounce) can is a nice feature also. The label on the can reads 5% ABV.

A: Pours a hazy to cloudy medium golden yellow in color with moderate to heavy amounts of active visible carbonation rising quickly from the bottom of the glass and faint amber highlights. The beer has a three finger tall sudsy dense foamy
light beige head that slowly reduces to a large half finger thick cap in the center of the glass surrounded by a large patch of thin film covering the remainder of the surface of the beer and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderate aromas of wheat and lightly toasted malts with a hint of caramel sweetness. Light to moderate aromas of banana + clove and a hint of lemon citrus (from the el dorado hops).

T: Upfront there is a moderate flavor of wheat malts with a light flavor of toasted malts with a light to moderate amount of caramel sweetness. That is followed by moderate flavors of banana + clove and light flavors of lemon citrus (likely from the el dorado hops). Very light amounts of bitterness int eh finish which fades away pretty quickly.

M: Just shy of medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp upfront and smooth throughout.

O: Easy to drink and refreshing but just not in the same category as the outstanding German examples (to which all Hefes need to be compared). Alcohol is well hidden and I could easily have a couple of these.

A: Pours a lightly cloudy golden yellow color with a fingers worth of head that leaves some decent lacing

S: Banana, clove, and wheat dominate, not really much else going on aside from some other spices

T: Follows the nose. Banana and clove up front with a strong wheat background. Some muddled spices in there with the wheat

M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Slightly chalky

O: A decent hefe, not really much going on aside from the banana, clove, and wheat though. Refreshing and easy to drink, but that's about it

Narragansett Brewing Co. "Have A Hefeweizen!"
16 fl. oz. can, production coded but without freshness dating
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

While it may not be the best example of what a Bavarian hefeweizen smells and tastes like, it's got the appearance (for the most part), and to be honest, the flavor and aroma aren't bad either. There's a clear note of banana, although it comes out more in the flavor than the aroma, and it's malty sweet with a touch of bready wheat and honey, and nicely balanced with some herbal and spicy hops appearing in the finish. There's also a subtle underlying spiciness that includes clove and some other phenols. And let's keep in mind, there's a lot of variation between the hefeweizens currently being produced in Germany (no one would confuse a Franziskaner for a Weihenstephaner), and I'm quite sure this wouldn't seem out of place at all. It's readily accessible, and highly drinkable. Well worth trying.

A thanks to the creator of the canquest, woodychandler, for this beer. Poured from a 16.9 oz. can. Has a cloudy golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is mild, wheat, light spices. Taste is wheat, lemons, a bit of spice, easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer.
