Breckenridge Brewery "Mountain Series: Kolsch Style Ale"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, no apparent freshness dating
$2 @ Wegmans, Collegeville, PA
Appearance: Clear straw gold beneath a creamy head of bright white that holds well and leaves walls and rings of lacing as it goes. Very nice!
Aroma: Sweetish grainy malt with an apple-like fruitiness and just a hint of floral and lightly grassy hops.
Flavor: As the aroma suggests. It's neither as bitter nor as hoppy as some of the examples I've sampled in Germany, but it's clean and beautifully fruity. It's balanced as well, but leaning a bit towards sweetness - which I feel is OK, there's no need to simply duplicate beers that already exist, so if a little sweetness is their take on it that's fine.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied with a soft and smooth gentle caress of carbonation across the palate. Again, it's not as highly carbonated as I'd normally expect of the style but that's OK.
Overall: Delicious! The malt, hops, and yeasty fruitiness all come together well to deliver the proper "Kölsch" character even if it isn't as 'stiff' as I might like it. Nicely done, and worth trying.

12oz bottle. Poured out a clear, straw yellow color with a small, white head of foam. It smelled of grains, caramel and citrus. Sweet caramel with a sharp bitterness.
