The beer was joyfully quaffed at Hay Merchant in Houston, served in a Breckenridge tulip.
The beer was an opaque black with no light penetration. It had a finger and a half fluffy, cloudlike head that was a light tan color.
The nose was good, very similar to the regular vanilla porter. It was nice roasted malts, heavy in the coffee, light in coffee, rounded out by the vanilla, some caramel, and a slight nuttiness and pistachio scent around the edges.
The flavor of this beer buries that of the regular vanilla porter. This has pretty solid coffee and chocolate notes up front, with some sweetness, but rounds out with a pleasant bitterness with some vanilla and the pistachio. The pistachio isn't hitting you in the face, but is perfectly done because it compliments the vanilla and roasted malt characters perfectly. It's fairly sweet, but not too Sweet. Overall, it tastes like you're drinking a coffee and pistachio cookie or ice cream.
The mouthfeel is the only thing lacking in my opinion. It's such a big and flavorful beer that it should be creamier or bigger, but it's just kind of light and watery with some sharp carbonation.
Overall it's a fantastic beer that I would definitely have again if given the opportunity.
