"Prykmestar Schwarz." 4.50% ABV. Branded black pry-off crown cap.
BOTTLE: 50cl. Brown glass. Simple black, red, and white label. Best before: 15.10.2015.
Expectations are average given the brewery. Served cold into a mason jar in Kuopio, Finland.
No bubble show forms as it's poured.
HEAD: Fills 80% of the glass. Pale khaki colour. Average consistency and complexion. Retention is good - ~8 minutes.
BODY: Dark brown-black. Opaque. No yeast is visible.
Pretty average appearance for a schwarzbier. Appears overcarbonated.
AROMA: Black coffee, black (schwarz) malts, burnt sugars, ash, char, and dark malts. I love that it seems more bitter than sweet; have I finally found schwarzbier for me?
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Has a nice coffee-like bitterness, which is a nice change from the usual cola-esque schwarzbier sweetness. Still, it does have that schwarz malt backbone balancing things out.
Aside from that, there's not much to it. It's a simple, shallow, likable schwarzbier, but aside from the one-two punch of coffee bitterness and dark malts, there isn't much. Some char, maybe.
TEXTURE: Medium-bodied, overcarbonated, smooth, wet, and unrefreshing.
A decent complement to the taste, but it doesn't elevate the beer as a whole.
OVERALL: A passable albeit forgettable schwarzbier that tips its balance towards the bitter end of the spectrum in an interesting way. Not a beer I'm in any rush to buy again, but nice work from Vakka-Suomen. Certainly drinkable.
Low C+ (3.07) / Above Average
