Red Eye Rye

I think its safe to say that this was the best beer I had at the 75th St. Brewery, and it is because it was on cask.

Appearance: Pours a nice scarlet yellow with a tall big bubbled head.

Smell: Smell is pretty complex - the hops is, of course, very forward. But under it, rises smells of pepper and other spices.

Taste: The taste is really amazingly smooth. I was expecting something much less round. It certainly delivers on the bitter hops - the whole mouth benefits generously with hops. It finishes with enough variety to be sipped as well as gulped.

Light brown and a bit hazy in appearance, not a bad head, but nothing that stuck around long. Good, solid aroma of hops to it, with a bit of a dry malt characteristic to it.

A bit of a malt characteristic to start off, but the hops soon overtake it. Mild hoppiness, but still very prevalent. Cripy, but you feel the hop bitterness as well, and it there's a bit of a dry feel to the end of it.

A good brew. I figured with a name containing the word 'rye' it would be a rye beer, which I anxiously anticipated. The waitress and the brewer both assured me it was a pale ale, though, and the brewer noted that the hops were a bit more prevalent than he had hoped, driving out some of the rye flavors that he expected. This brew might change to that effect in the next batch.
