According to the brewery, this one comes in at 9.83%. Could have fooled me!

This was served in a small brandy snifter. It poured a ruddy, embarrassed cheeks red, with a rather full head that fell rather quickly to next to nothing. It was also a bit cloudy for whatever reason.

The nose is faintly malty. There are no noticeable hops, but there is a disconcerting fruit punch smell.

The fruit punch aroma carries over into the taste, unfortunately. Think carbonated Hawaiian Punch, but slightly less sweet. There's a very slight hop bitterness that comes through to the end, which, oddly enough, seems to add to the fruint punch flavor. I'm not sure if they brewed this with an ale yeast, but it's far, far more estery and fruity than one would expect for what typically should be a malty lager. It's not bad, but is it truly a maibock?

The mouthfeel here is decidedly medium. T'ain't watery, t'ain't chewy, it's just... well, beer.

Overall, this has a Belgian dubbel character to it, rather than a maibock. In fact, were this presented to me as a dubbel, I'd have rated it rather high. As it is, it really misses the mark due to unexpected and uncharacteristic fruitiness. It isn't bad, but it sure isn't what it's advertised to be. I doubt I'd try this again.
