Uniquity Sour Cherry Belgian Quad aged in Cabernet barrels according to the rectangle shaped label. Yellow-green 750ml bottle corked and caged under a thin layer of maroon wax. 2010 vintage. No specific bottle date or best by date visible. A nice presentation; Purchased from the brewery in Jan 2011 for about $22.

Poured into an old style Boulevard Smokestack goblet.

Pours a muddy chocolate brown with dishwater brown highlights. A quick flash of tan foam leaves behind no trace that it was ever around.

It takes a bit of time for the beer to warm and really give off an aroma. Slowly, a blend of red wine and cherries dominates with a small touch of sweet candi in the background. It's an odd combination that doesn't really resonate.

The flavor is dominated by strong wine and fresh oak flavors. First sips are closer to carbonated wine than beer. With some serious effort you can taste what has the promise of being a nice quad under it all. However, the win and oak is simply out of control and out of balance.

Mouthfeel is nice and dry, appropriate for a quad. Carbonation is a notch low for a typical quad, but not unexpected for a barrel aged beer.

Drinkability is not a strong point. The flavors are just so rough that it's tough to drink very much.

Overall, I applaud 75th for going out on a limb with this one, but this is not a winner in my book. It's possible that 3+ years will do this one some good, but for the cost, I'm not willing to buy another one to find out.
