you have to like the weird, and probably be a coffee nerd to fully appreciate this one, but this variation of their classic hogpound brown is just a fantastic and totally original beer. not sure i have seen this special coffee in a beer before, left out in monsoon conditions for months to reduce acidity and take on a cool, deep, musty funk. its almost like wild beer, but for coffee, and it comes through this medium depth brown ale really well. the aroma is both earthy and spicy, dark roasted smelling than the color indicates, and with a distinct chocolate note along with the coffee and a little astringency. its strange to my senses, but its attractive. the coffee isnt too heavy in the flavor, but its unique mustiness is certainly on display with notes of good espresso, root beer, and chocolate malt, its an excellent combination of flavors, and this brown ale is the perfect platform for it. the coffee is a bit weird, and expecting a more conventional coffee profile in here might lead one to think its stale or gone off, but there is a well controlled unique element to it that i just love. its highly aromatic, and despite the processing, there is still some acidity to it. dried fruits, bakers chocolate, and sourdough bread crusts burnt a little in the toaster. this is rad beer, and while i think it could take on a little more body and carbonation, its lighter aspects let the coffee come through in all its colors. excellent stuff, i want to drink this coffee independent of beer. these guys are so underappreciated its crazy, some of the best beer in kansas city...
