Sampled 12/23/2010 at the brewpub. This is a strange one. It's the Midnight Special (scotch ale) with liquid smoke in it. Yes, like the stuff that you would cook with. mesquite to be exact, and made by Stub's no less.
Pours black with a little brown and red peaking through, beige head, the retention isn't great nor is the lacing.
Aroma is very smokey, wow. I even guessed mesquite before the bartender confirmed that. It's intense. Not much else to smell other than a bit of roast.
Flavor is surprisingly not bad. Again very heavy on the mesquite. Not overly "traditional" for a smoked beer but then how much tradition is there in this style? Lots of residual sugar, some roast, and surprisingly clean. Kind of bacon-y. Medium bitterness.
Body is medium/heavy and decently drinkable, my glass was plenty for me. Kind of strange really.
