Truth or Dare is an edgy, progressive strong ale blend. This imperial version of Picture City Porter fermented with cacao nibs, is the 300th batch we've brewed at Ladyface. Its malty softness meets the intense, oak barrel-aged Reyes Adobe Red to create a 60/40 blend bold with Bourbon and chocolate flavors. Finishing quite dry considering its high alcohol, the 72 IBUs reflect Reyes Adobe Red's Columbus hops.

Consumed February 15th, 2014 at the brewery. ABV noted as 9.2% ABV on menu. Called a "blended barrel-aged ale".
Beer is one shade lighter brown than black... okay, it's black with deep mahogany highlights when held to light. Creamy one-finger tan head eventually becomes a sticky, lacy crown.
Aroma is a little butterscotch, a lot chocolate and a touch funky... something is off here, and I don't know if it's intentional or not.
Vaguely sour/acidic grape-like flavor on first sip. Woody bitterness. Some chocolate and a touch of plummy fruit. More bitter than anything else, especially on the finish.
Medium mouthfeel: unremarkable. Alcohol is notable.
Overall, not distinct at all and very middle-of-the-road execution. Probably will not order again.

A: Pours a dark brownish with crimson edges when held to the light. Nearly a half-inch tan head leaves nice sheet lace.
N: Faint booze, pine and malts.
T: Oaky wood, roast, raisons and figs, slight sherry, and faint dark chocolate.
M: Full body and medium carbonation. Creamy and rich finish.
O: Combination of a porter and an imperial red is interesting, but a bit muddled.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ & Brewing in Long Beach, CA.
Pours a clear super dark crimson-brown with a foamy tan head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour and tart with some dark fruit, yeast, and Brett-like aromas. Taste is much the same with a Brett-like flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of funky bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer but there are very noticeable sour and Brett-like aromas and flavors that aren't mentioned on the brewer's notes for this beer.

Served on tap, poured into a snifter.
Appearance: Almost black with a short head, decent retention. Nothing special to look at; you're not really sure what you're going to get just by looking at the beer though.
Smell: Some interesting things going on here; there's hops, there's a malty sweetness, and then a hint of tart, dark fruit.
Taste: This is where things get interesting. Sure, it's a strong ale; there's an oaky quality, some strong hops with hints of grapefruit and pine, a malty backbone, but the one thing you'll notice right up front is some sourness. It almost could have been classified as a wild sour ale; it's not overwhelmingly sour, though. Drinkable, but it's a sipper.
Mouthfeel: Full bodied, smooth, a little dry aftertaste.
Overall: A special, unique beer, but I wasn't begging for more. Nevertheless it's a style I want to see improved upon by Ladyface. A worthy experiment.
