Black body with some brown on the edges. presented with a small, tannish head.
Aromas of star anise, chocolate and spicy hops. very dry smelling, with some coffee grounds as well.
Loads of bitter sweet chocolate. Very dry, roasted, coffee malts. Burnt and woody midpalate leading into a hop finish the has some pepper spice and slight bitter pine. There is a lingering bitterness, but it I more coffee like than hops.
A decent black IPA. Good flavors. My only complaint is that it is a little too much on the dry side for me.

Sampled 4/29/2011 at the brewery.
Pours a murky brown, beige head, not much lacing or retention. Ugly.
Aroma is pine, some pineapple, roast, and caramel.
Flavor is piney, fruity, nutty, and roasty (all more or less in equal proportions), followed by some toffee and malt. This is more of a hoppy brown ale.
Light/medium body, moderately enjoyable because it's not over the top on the roast, and amply carbonated.
