Sampled at the 7th Annual San Diego Strong Ale Festival at the Carlsbad Pizza Port. Red Star imperial stout had a dark ruby-brown, almost (but not quite) black color and a modest mocha hued head. Some minor lace was left behind. The smell was a blend of roasted malt, coffee grounds, and a touch of dark chocolate. The taste was mainly of roasted coffee beans and some cocoa with hints of dark fruits (prune/dates). A moderate amount of bitterness came through in the finish. The feel was smooth and dry but a bit thinner than most other imperial stouts sampled.
Overall, this was a decent imperial stout. The alcohol content is well hidden and it has a nice flavor and easy drinkability. Worth a try if you see it.
