Poured from a 335ml can

L: Black with a small brown head. Leaves lacing as the head slowly dissappear.

S: Dark chocolate, coffee and molasses with a slight undecided hop smell.

T: Right off the top it has a dirt taste with an unbalanced hop flavour that makes it seen like there isn't enough hops to cut back on the sweet flavour that is emitted. But on second taste it's more like they didn't use the right hops in the beer to give it a balanced taste.

F: almost like there is no carbination to the beer, but an overall nice full body feel.

O: It would be a good beer if you where having a BBQ steak that had lots of flavour because you wouldn't be able to distinguish the hops that aren't there.

355 ml can, as pictured, sold in 4 pack cardboard box complete with tasting notes card.
Clear, dark brown with a tan head. Short tight foam, long lasting leaving even lace rings.
Malty smell, hint of smoke, as hoped for.
Decent flavor, dark caramel malt base, touch of smoke at the end.
Not the greatest black lager, but still very enjoyable.

Overall, a very pleasant surprise! I'm pleasantly surprised to FINALLY find a craft brewer that is actually based in my home town. I was equally surprised to discover their attempt at one of my favorite beer styles! This is far from the best Schwarzbier I've tasted, but it's a sporting effort. The overall complexity and finish is a notch below comparable Black Lagers I've tasted. I do love the packaging and overall concept. Keep brewing, Something Brewing, you're my only hope (in Red Deer.)

355ml can, packaged in a 4-fer, with tasting notes and an old-school sticker! (Exclamation due to their use of the original Star Wars opening screen as their design inspiration). Oh, and this appears to be the craft-wannabe arm of that venerable brewer of low-cost Alberta lagers.

This beer pours a clear, very dark brown cola colour, with one measly finger of wanly foamy, and mostly just plainly bubbly beige head, which leaves a few paltry streaks of broadly webbed lace around the glass as things quickly settle.

It smells of lightly roasted caramel malt, wet ash, pithy generic bar-top nuts, a touch of earthy yeast, ethereal black fruit, and leafy, weedy hops. The taste is fairly sweet bready caramel malt, with only a subtle soupcon of roasted acridity, an increase in that mixed nut-bowl pithiness, yeast-flecked fresh-picked red grapes, and plain Jane leafy, earthy hops.

The bubbles are pretty low-key and understated to say the least, the body a decent medium weight for the style, and actually quite smooth, the nascent smoke hardly making a dent here. It finishes just off-dry, the caramel malt putting in a bit of OT to keep the ash and hops from running the table.

A pretty decent rendition of this heady German lager style, the heavy black malts with a wisp of smoke well rendered. Now, about the marketing - it seems clear to me what they're going for, but in their attempt at duality, I'm getting much more of a Spaceballs feeling here. Maybe it's just the power of the 'Schwarz'.
