No label information. Ditch Digger Brown is brewed in the style of an American Brown Ale. The second entry in the Inmate Hooch series following Summer 2012's Prison Camp Pils, released fall 2013. Available in limited run 22 oz. bottles and limited draft.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle to a Jailhouse pint glass. Served above 54ยบ Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours a foamy froth head of a pale beige head over a cola brown body with a mild haziness and medium spritely carbonation. Retention is very good and lacing is light and patchy. 3.75

(Smell) Medium toasted bread malts with a moderate sweetness plus some complexity from chocolate malts and a dash of fruit complexity. Hop aromas of herbal and fruity notes with a modest bitterness. The aroma is somewhat sweet and fruity overall. Potency is medium/high. 3.75

(Taste) The flavor is slightly thinner but has more edgy specialty malt flavor, a touch of roastiness and charred malt, toasted caramel and unsweetened chocolate. Fruit notes are somewhat more reserved, but stone fruit essences including cherry are fairly easy to detect. Hop flavor is mild, herbal, earthy and slightly fruity with a shallow bitterness to pair the highly understated sweetness. There are things I wished were preserved from the aroma, but the surprises that the malt profile generated did more than enough to counter for any disappointment. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) The texture is soft, medium chewy, lightly dry. Carbonation generates a soft frothiness for a slightly creamy, mildly frothy mouthfeel. The body is medium for the style, medium+ overall. Balance is slightly roasty and earthy over sweet and bitter. Alcohol presence is very low and there are no notable off characters. 4

(Overall) This was a difficult beer to track down, but far from a regrettable one. It's my hope that Jailhouse Brewing keeps this series running as a yearly installment for as long as possible because both entries have been quite enjoyable. I very much enjoy the attention to detail for specialty malts, which came through best on the flavor. It may be far from the sweetest and heaviest drinking American Brown, but with flavor and ABV as approachable as ever, a highly drinkable beer may be the best thing for this. Worth seeking out! 3.75

Appearance: Pours a clear, hearty-looking brown body with an underscoring of golden-amber and a small-sized cap of lightly yellowed beige foam.

Smell: Restrained roastiness, though, there is a thin edge of char. Well-toasted bread crust. Some lightly sweetish notes of chocolate, caramel. Estery fruitiness. Subtle hop notes of spicy herbs.

Taste: Toast leads to a lightly ashen roastiness, a sliver of caramel, and chocolate cookies. Medium sweetness. Minor touch of spiced cherry and golden raisin. Herbal, spicy hops, a bit leafy, too, with a sufficient bitterness to balance things out. Drying finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium carbonation.

Overall: A solid, enjoyable brown ale.
