The orange-amber colored, clear body, and the three finger thick, foamy head, made a respectable presentation. The smell was indeed a hop riot, with an earthy, spicy, citric, and floral hop bouquet. The taste, on the other had, was a touch too astringent. It was a very strong, tea like, herbal bitterness that lingered with each sip. The finish was gingery and prickly. A little harsh on the palette, but not too hard to drink overall.

Aroma is very strong and VERY hoppy, with an undertone of grapefruit. It pours a dark coppery brown, almost mahogany, with a thick pale tan head. Seriously hoppy flavor has strong evergreen and grass notes, a little bitterness, and hints of grapefruit and lemon plus a whisper of caramel. Smooth texture has average body but a good amount of fizz and hoppy bitter bite. A "hop riot" indeed!

On tap at Taco Mac Metropolis. Reviewed from Notes.

(Appearance) pours a deep orange ruby red tone with a mild haze. Cream head is thin. Subtle but bold appearance. 3.5

(Smell) Sweet fruit hops over a mild malty base. Mildly potent. 3.5

(Taste) sweet berry fruits and roasted caramel malt in the beginning, with booze and a mild bitter hop wave on the finish. A heavier IPA but full of deeper flavors. 4

(Mouthfeel) Slick smooth with very low carbonation presence. It could improve some in this regard. Mild alcohol presence. Light/medium body. Good pairing in focusing on the maltier side of this beer. 3.5

(Overall) a maltier IPA but savors the best of most aspects of the beer world. All around its a pretty solid brew. Moderately recommended. 3.5

11 ounce pour - $6.75 at Taco Mac in Canton, Georgia.

Appearance: Delivered to the table a clear, amber body with a whitish, bubbly, well-frothed head. Nice lace sheets on the drop.

Smell: Floral, resinous pine, citrusy hops blended with a cereal-scented crystal maltiness with a growing toastiness and overall sweetish accents as it warms. Though, as the heat comes in, so does a sliver of buttery diacetyl.

Taste: A toasted amber maltiness lovingly ramped up and delivering a round, moderate sweetness. A bit more toast and toffee (also some lightly alcoholic heat) as you wait for the hops to roll in. There they are: resins, orange blossoms, and some light additional citrus. Moderate bitterness. Hint of dried berries. Citrus, buttered malts, and still that berry highlight on the jumbled finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-plus body. Medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel.

Overall: It's not Jailhouse's best and already we have another release featuring buttery diacetyl.

Appearance: Pours a clear amber color capped by an inch or so of foam that leaves a few shards along the side of the pint glass

Smell: A pine forest of hops wafts above the toffee and brown sugar elements

Taste: Loads of caramel sweetness, up front, with the piney and pithy hops taking over by mid-palate; after the swallow, the flavors balance out somewhat, but the there is a considerable amount of residual sugar in the finish

Mouthfeel: Medium to full body with moderate carbonation; a bit sticky

Overall: This has the makings of a very nice DIPA, though I would like to see the sweetness toned down a notch

A: Dark amber, very similar to a lager. Thick, pure white head.

S: Caramel. Sugar Daddy, Sugar Babies!!! Caramel topping. Did I mention caramel? Toffee!! Slight, slight citrus; minimal.

T: Roasted caramel. Toffee! Almost burnt sugar. Vanilla. Roasted Marshmallows!

M: Thick, slightly foamy and slightly chewy. Very pleasant!

O: A damn good IIPA!!!!

Crazy thanks to brentk56 for the extra!!!

A 22oz picked up at Green's in January 2012

A - A dark amber with 2 fingers of sticky lace, a tons of sticky lace left on the top and all over the glass all the way down. Impressive.

S - Wow, grain/malty overload. Piny hops.

T - A huge malt forward backing, and loads of piny hops. Citrus fruits towards the end, but a bitter aftertaste. Finishes dry.

M - Medium bodied. Well carbonated.

O - A decent DIPA, especially for those who love the pine/bitter hops.

A solid enough double IPA, with a little too much graininess present, but nice floral and piney hops. Pours amber with a decent head that leaves some lacing. A lot of cereal grain aromas in the nose, along with some dry, resinous hops. The grain dominates the hops, however. The taste is better, with a lingering dry bitterness, more hop presence, and noticeable pine flavors developing from a slightly floral base, but a definite background note of cereal grains again. Fairly smooth, appropriately carbonated, and with a nice, dry finish. Decent beer, and nice to see this brewery pumping out the offerings.

22oz bottle from Greens (Atlanta, GA). 6.99. No bottling date (young brewery so it's to be expected) but I know this was just bottled & released this past week. Poured into a snifter.

Pours murky orange with 1 finger off white head. Moderate lacing.

Nice! Smells of all variety of hops- floral, citris, pine, dankness. A really great smelling IPA.

It tastes good but doesn't quite live up to the nose. Great bittering hops but very little in the pine and citris. Some sweet malt back but it's mostly those bitter hops, not that it's really a bad thing.

Medium body, fairly sticky. A good bit of carbonation lets that bitter hoppyness tingle on the tongue.

Another fine brew from Jailhouse. Much better than the Mugshot IPA. It's quite good but could benefit from some tweaking- I'm not sure if it needs a different hop combination, a little more sweet malt body or some of each. In any case, Glenn has done a good job & I look forward to seeing where else he'll take my taste buds in the years to come.

Had on draft at Taco Mac.
Overall this is a pretty good dipa. Slightly out of balance for me with bitterness leading and following. However it isn't over the top. Spicy hops dominate, with a thick mouthful. My review really isn't doing this beer justice, but it is a lot better than the one other review would indicate. I would drink this one again.

22oz bottle labeled Imperial Pale Ale.

Pours fairly dark for a DIPA, a deep clear golden amber with a thick but small head that recedes slowly to a thin collar.

Nose is very floral with lots of herbal grassy notes and some noticeable green, fresh hop notes. There is a hint of citrus, maybe oranges, and some toasted bready malts.

Taste is seriously bitter up front with some biting herbal notes. Definitely short on citrus and the malts is the backbone take on a bit of caramel sweetness. But the it's all swept away in the finish with a bitterness than lingers on the palate with a slightly metallic character. It's not that it's massively bitter, just that the bitterness seems to come without any good hop flavors.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with strong carbonation and the previously mentioned bitterness.

This is not one of my favorites from Jailhouse who usually deliver. It's the bitterness of the taste that keeps it from being up to their high standards for me. A little too metallic and lacking hop flavors. That said, I'm always eagerly awaiting the next Jailhouse release.
