Sampled on draft at Mary's Rec Room, while some bad cabaret singer wailed upstairs and lady alt-country blared on the stereo. Does bad music make crappy beer worse?
Blackish brown with light khaki tan foam on the surface. Clingy collar of lace around the edges. Lighter chestnut color around the edges where the light gets through. Retention was ok, as it lasted for the duration of the small glass.
Mildly sweet and roasty aroma, vaguely floral and green with some sort of indistinguishable variety of hops. So far so good.
Flavor starts roasty and very mildly bitter, with an astringent turn in the finish. Lingering grassy hop bitterness in the aftertaste, mild toasty malt, not especially blackened. Light bodied, approaching medium. The astringency seemed to build over time, it was hard to pin down the source of it, as a Black IPA shouldn't have the tangy "infected porter" feel to it. Sort of watery towards the last couple sips. Might give this another chance if walking by Hamburger Mary's again, but I don't see that happening soon.
