Served in a chalice at the brewpub.
A collaboration (sorry, collaBOOration) with Lunar Brewing, I've heard this called Black Trappist Moon before, but the brewpub advertised it as Black Trippel. Never had a black tripel before (also struggled with classifying it as a BSDA, but it definitely has a decidedly tripel feel to it), so this is new territory. It pours a glossy obsidian topped by a finger of oatmeal-tan foam. Lovely beer, really, especially in the chalice. The nose comprises cocoa, roasted malts, light coffee, fig, raisin, molasses, brown sugar, cinnamon, and very light green apple skin. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some clove, black pepper, toasted wheat, and banana (both peel and flesh). It lives up to the billing, as this does taste like a tripel bedecked in roast. Nice. The body is a straight medium, with a light moderate carbonation, a sorta grainy feel, and a kinda dry finish. Overall, a very nice experiment, something I'd like to see some other brewers try sometime. Good times.
