Served in a Bruery snifter.
Another Monk Society holdover, this one's from January. I get a little edgy when something is defined by the brewer as being an "American Strong Ale", especially considering that's just a catchall "style". Oh, well, here goes... It pours a clear ruby-garnet topped by a healthy bit of sandy beige foam. The nose comprises ruby red grapefruit zest, coffee, and fresh rye bread. ...I have no idea what to expect now...I kinda like this feeling... The taste is a blast of ruby red grapefruit, pine sap, light mint, and a vague sense of caramel in the back. Imagine a clone of Arrogant Bastard, but without the swagger, the overconfidence of that prick of a gargoyle (aw, who'm I kidding? I'm still not worthy...). In other words, it's not as complex, as well-rounded as the Bastard, but comes close. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a fairly dry finish. Overall, a solid brew, one that approximates the character of Arrogant Bastard, but one that doesn't live up to its pretensions. Still pretty decent, though...
