The beer pours a dark amber/red color with just a few bubbles that quickly fades to a nearly still beer. The aroma is average. It has a sweet caramel malt scent along with a touch of roasted malt and light to mild hops. Because it's basically flat, the aroma isn't as pronounced. The taste is below average. It's a malt forward amber ale that doesn't have much hop character. It's overly sweet and unbalanced. The mouthfeel is horrible. It's devoid of any carbonation which really ruins the entire beer. This could be a good beer with some minor modifications. It's needs carbonation. Uncarbonated beer is just unexceptable. Also, cut the amount of specialty grains and up the hops. Just sayin'.

North by Northwest pours a radiant hue of red that is just a little bit cloudy. Pretty much no head on this one, which worries me a little bit.

The aroma is strange. Sharp scents of over-ripe fruit mix with a little bit of sweet malt.

Thankfully, the flavor of North by Northwest doesn't follow the aroma. Not exactly anyway. I was under the impression that this beer is a malty red, which meant that I expected a sweet, rich beer. This beer is certainly very sweet, but a huge, somewhat cloying fruit flavor from the ale yeast dwarfs the malt flavors. Underneath that fruit there is a little bit of toffee and a hint of smokiness, which I like. Overall, however, I do not like that fruitiness.

The mouthfeel could use a little more life in the form of carbonation, but it isn't as dead as the appearance would suggest.

A couple of other people in my party enjoyed this beer, but it just did not work for me. I would not recommend it.
