Band Wagon High Step Hefeweizen pours a cloudy yellow with a small white head. Retention is fairly good, lacing is scant.
The aroma has a good dose of esther and spices, with a hint of bubblegum and a massive amount of malty wheat. Just a hint of alcohol in the background.
I should start out by saying that I'm not sure this is technically a hefeweizen. BandWagon calls it a hefeweizen, and it has all of the same characteristics of a hefeweizen, but it is about 9.5% ABV. I think of it as a hefeweizen on steroids. One thing I like about this beer is that the malt does the talking. It seems like there is a little bit of pale malted barley, but mostly there is a ton of malted wheat that gives the beer that nice wheat twang. The spices are once again the most pronounced contribution of the yeast to this beer, with clove, pepper contributing a generally spicy character. After that a little bit of bubble gum and banana give way to a finish that has a touch of alcohol and quite a bit of warmth to it.
Big and creamy, This beer is definitely full-bodied for the style.
Maybe this one isn't quite to style, but at 9.5%ABV and 3 bucks a pint after 10, I drank a few of these.
