I enjoyed this brew a while back on a drive down from San Fran to San Diego. What an epic beer trip. Sadly, this one was not part of it.
Half Moon Bay Brewing Company is a placed that was hedged in fog during the afternoon we visited, and seems to be a lovely sit-down establishment where the seafood is probably good and they once in a while have live music. Fair enough. But I'm vegetarian, love beer, and neither the food nor the beer were particularly amazing. Still, this pale ale was pleasant enough to drink, so I'm giving it something around a "B".
The appearance is a hazy gold with minimal head and no lace by mid-glass. The smell has a bready malt character that balances the minimal hop presence that's mostly light and floral. It tastes a watery bland that doesn't match the aroma, and has a slightly too-bitter end. The hops in the taste are a bit stronger than in the nose, and that saves this one.
It's easy to drink despite its apparent weakness in carbonation, but the taste prevents me from wanting another. And the taste of the food... shudder.
But that's for another review.

On tap at the brewpub.
Pours a clear golden-copper color with a lasting one-finger white head.
Aroma is sweet malt and citrus hops, along with a slight marijuana note. Fairly typical except for the wacky weed.
Flavor also has sweet pale and caramel malt, orangish and piney hops, and the weed that is wacky. Nothing too out of the ordinary.
Medium-bodied with average carbonation and mouthfeel.
A decent pale ale overall, drinkable if nothing else. I'm giving a lot of these HMB beers similar ratings, because the quality is very, very consistent here: slightly above average.

01/21/05- On tap at the HMB Brewery.
Presentation- 4 oz sampler part of a 2 day 4 sampler binge.
Appearance- Light copper colored with a creamy ultra white head and average lacing.
Smell- Both malt and hops are fighting for supremecy. I think malt wins in the long run though. Well balanced brew with lots of fruity zing in the hops.
Mouthfeel- Higher carbonation than I would like. Almost foamy.
Drinkability- The carbonation brings it down a slight notch, but otherwise a real nice ale.
