On tap at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company. Served in a 8 oz snifter - appearance is a deep, muddy brownish maroon. No head.
Smells of sweet Belgian yeast, sugar, malt. The aging in wine barrels lends a dark berry and oak aroma. Tastes of rich, sweet caramel malt, dates, raisins, and some warm holidy spices. Finishes with a tannic, almost bitter quality that you'd get from dark berries with notes of vanilla.
I thought this beer was excellent - one of the best I've had at Half Moon Bay Brewing. I decided to splurge for a growler of it to share with friends, as it's a great Fall sipper.
From HMB's blog:
Thrilled with our recent purchase, we came back to the harbor and got to work, brewing a super malty Belgian Quadruppel (it was the most grain we've ever fit in our 15 BBL mash tun). As the fermentation started to slow down, we decided to fill three Pinot barrels and one Chard barrel with the Quad, each with a small, secondary pitch of different yeast, not to mention adding 6 lbs. of dates to one barrel and 10 lbs. of raisins to another. About six months later, once the secondary fermentation had run its course, we blended all four barrels into a serving tank.
The result? A 14.5% ABV Belgian Quadruppel with a tannic, alcohol-forward, red wine character balanced by a malty, datey, raisiny sweetness. Truly an amazing flavor experience.
