On tap at Strand Brewing Company in Torrance, CA.

Pours a murky dark brow with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Thin rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, coffee, cocoa, and some mild herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with a medium amount of roasty and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that has a nice balance between roasty and hoppy.

@bluepalms

App- almost black with a two finger head. Sticky thick lace all the down the glass.

Smell- Huge dark roasty malts with a faint hop kick.

Taste- Big hops with a piney resin. Just a good ipa mixed with lots of malts

Mouth- Medium bodied and medium carbonation. Very wet, tasty.

Drink- This was a very tasty beer! I normally dont like Black Ipas
but I would have this again.

Full pint from the tap at Beachwood BBQ in Seal Beach, CA accompanied by some fried pickles and a pulled chicken sandwich!

a - Very dark, some deep brown and gold colors around the edges in the light. Small head, but medium thickness and good lacing

s - chocolate, sweet, malt, pine notes

t - great! complex, lots of different flavors. A little chocolate, a little hops, a little bit of everything it seems. Lingering effects are positively delightful.

m - very slightly creamy, generally pleasant.

o - wouldn't hesitate to order it again!

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours black with a medium off-white head, good lace and head retention.

S: Dark chocolate with some pine, light citrus.

T: A heavy dark malt and chocolate flavour with a balanced hop character. Never astringent the hops bring a lot of pine and citrus and works with the malt which is good to see in a Black IPA.

M: Medium to full-bodied, creamy, soft carbonation.

O: Black IPA is not the best style for me but I clearly enjoyed this one. Very good balance in the flavours, Strand continues to impress.

Another solid offering from Joel and Rich in Torrance.

Served on-tap in a pint glass at The Yard in Santa Monica.

While not the hoppiest black IPA I've ever had, it was definitely another representation of Strand's beer making wheelhouse: malt balance. Definitely had gobs of dark chocolate on the nose, bit of orange zest from hop character. Mouthfeel is great, very rich, almost porter-like. Has a fair amount of hop bite, more to keep the beer from being overly cloying. Doesn't punch you in the face with hops, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Makes a great food pairing IPA, especially enjoyed it with my mid-rare skirt steak. My only critique that the aroma lacked a bit of a punch. Still, delicious beer, glad I tried, would order it again in a second if I saw it, and would definitely hope that they to add it to their year round line-up.
