Poured a dark tan, somewhat transparent, with a solid 1/4 inch head. Sweet smelling ale, but not overbearing: might caramel, some ripe dark fruit, a bit of alcohol, too, which is surprising. There are some "winter" spice aromas coming from it: cloves, nutmeg, allspice, again all subtle. The taste is not outstanding, but it is quite good. Initial taste is that of a decent Belgian dubbel with ripe fruit, sweet honey, very little bitterness. On the back end, it's on the tart side: cherries, some wooden dryness, a bit of caramel. Some Scotch ales can be syrupy thick, but this one doesn't coat the inside of your mouth, and for that I'm thankful. The carbonation's too much at first, but it settles down. I might just drink it again.
