On tap at The Factory Gastrobar in Long Beach, CA.

A-Nice-looking brew. Copper with a hint of red. Great lacing.

S-The nose is a fantastic for a German Helles, great sweet malty aromas, with a touch of roast, but completely absent of hops.

T-This is a subtlely hopped IPA, an admirable trait these days. Not lightly hopped. It opens with big earthy German-esque malt and slides into a very austere hop profile-lots of bittering, not too much aroma.

M-Drinks like a lager, but a very hoppy lager. Good balance with the earthy malt character.

D-Very clean, doesn't linger on the palate for long, making one want more.

Overall a great rookie effort at IPA. I would order another.

On-tap at the brewpub. Pours an orange amber color with dense head and high retention due to an obvious generous amount of carbonation. The aroma is chiefly of dish soap, perfumey and floral hops, and pears. Tastes bitter and floral with lots of soap, herbal and perfumey hops with some caramel malts on the finish. This is pretty poor. Feels full and silky but with a sticky soapiness. I wouldn't drink a pint of this. Stick to their German biers.

On tap at Sudwerk on 7/15/09.

A - Rusty orange body with vigorous carbonation and one-and-a-half fingers of frothy, off-white head that yielded lots of exquisite thick, foamy lace around the mug.

S - Not a very pungent or expressive hop character. Some citrus is apparent. After that, perhaps some pine or herbal notes are noticeable, but hops are very faint overall. Malt is sweet with hints of caramel.

T - Pretty non-descript hop profile, unfortunately. While this is certainly a bitter IPA, the hops aren't too terribly defined. There are some citrusy and herbal characteristics present, but that's about it. Malt is sweet with hints of caramel and toasted grains.

M - Light to medium bodied with a pretty thin, watery texture and minimal carbonation. Slightly bitter on the palate with a dry, metallic finish.

D - Underwhelming IPA overall. While a pretty hoppy offering, the hop profile isn't well defined and the finish is kind of metallic. This wasn't horrible or anything, but it was certainly not memorable.

On tap at the brewery. Very deep amber-ruby, suggesting lots of carmel malts; luckily they don't dominate the flavor profile. Big NW hop nose (mostly cascade) that makes for a pleasantly bitter ale. Fairly traditional, but with a definate American twist since the hops are so upfront. Not a grapefruit style IPA, but rather more like a fruitcake-style IPA. Lingering bitterness. Fresh and refreshing. Cheers!
