A: Perfectly clear copper-colored body with a foamy white head. Pours a bit slick – the head disappears in seconds – but I guess that’s expected for the style.
S: Maris Otter toffee and vanilla are present in force – smells malt-heavy to the extreme. There’s a familiar vegetal and fusel alcohol note, as well (King Cobra, anyone?), though it plays second fiddle to the sweet grains.
T&M: Thick and malty, but with an alcoholic kick to it. Wow, that’s incredibly to style, but it somehow turned out…tasty? That’s usually not a descriptor that comes up when downing a 40, but I’ll take it. The flaked rye and Maris Otter give it a dark, distinct palate, filled to the brim with vanilla and honey tastes (kind of like candy corn in a glass, though not excessively cloying most of the time) that play perfectly with this beer’s thick body and creamy carbonation. A slight astringency from both rye husk and crisp, leafy hops, though, gives the palate some dry balance, as does a touch of booze. Corn flavors drift across the tongue toward the finish, leaving this with a grainy, sugary taste: Frosted Flakes…?
O: If the price were closer to Olde English or Cobra, I’d buy this all the time – this malt liquor has character and, dare I say, class. For the malt lover, this will satisfy the urge for that thick, chewy sweetness. For everyone else, grab a paper bag and swig – you can’t go wrong. Cheers!
