an interesting paradox here, imperial kolsch are two words not often put together, if ever, and it doesnt really make a whole lot of sense. by adding all the malt and sugar you need to crank the abv, you defeat the kolsch part of the beer, even if the recipe is just expanded, it becomes something other than a kolsch, although with all of that said, i liked this beer pretty well. from a pint can it pours an orange brassy color and holds a thick head thats pure white. it smells and tastes very sweet, similar to a belgian tripel in some ways, but not quite as complex, a little more german, but equally strong and residually sugary. i think its a well made beer, is smooth and rich and pretty good, but the recipe is weird, a lot of a malt that usually is balanced, so its new to me, but it isnt bad. i was happy to be sharing the can though, this is boozy, and it might do better in the mid 7% abv range instead of being this high. i like it being organic too, very cool thing about asher in general. worth a try for something real different.
