On tap at Brickhouse BBQ in Madison, Wisconsin. Served in shaker pint 11/23/2014.

A- Dark caramel brown body. Half finger white head with a bit of retention time, but otherwise no lacing. Thin film persists at the surface of this otherwise darker beer. [3.5]

S- Roast malt, citrus, caramel, herbs. The roast character on this one is strong, which surprised me, but as a whole, Lagunitas did not surprise me with this one. Smells essentially like a black IPA to me. [3.75]

F- Citrus zest, earthy and grassy hop aromas abound, with most of the bitterness seeming to be associated with the grassy hop aromas. Less roast malt than in the nose, but plenty of caramel malt to back things up. [3.75]

M- On the thinner side of the spectrum, not difficult to drink and carbonated on the lighter side. Bitter grassy finish. [3.25]

O- Seems like an interesting take on what tastes to me like a "Black Pale Ale"; I don't know if that's the right category but its certainly has a fair amount of stout-porter roast character on the nose. Interesting and solid beer, it didn't do it for me though. [4.25]

On tap at Tony's Darts Away in Burbank, CA.

Pours a hazy copper with a foamy beige head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. A foamy curtain of lace coats the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, caramel, citrus zest, earth, and herbal hop aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, earth, and herbal hop flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty, but I like the hop characteristics in the aroma slightly better.

Serving type: on tap.
