July 28th, 2015 - When I think of Lagunitas, I think of dank weedy smokers and dank weedy beers. But their Imperial Pils is phenomenal, even if it isn't toking away on hop cones. Purchased at the brewery and enjoyed at Big Sur, it has a light baked biscuit aroma, and offers the thinnest touch of grapefruit and orange zest. And although I didn't cool it down all the way to an optimal temperature, the flavor comes through quite clearly. The alcohol brings a lovely scone sweetness, and blends nicely with the slight orange and grapefruit flavors. But the base is still that clear, pilsener with a tasty grain flavor and dryness. Balanced and assertive, it is one of my new favorite Lagunitas brews.

This was poured into a pilsener glass. The appearance was a burnt yellow color. Light carbonation could be seen rising to fill a rapidly dissipating one fingered head. Lacing was messy with a semi-thick appeal to it. The smell starts off with a sweet grassiness rolling into some light delicate malt (slightly like corn). The taste was moderately sweet and taking the sweet grassiness to blend in a slight grainy sort of fashion. There’s a semi-smooth sweet grassy edge to the aftertaste and riding into the aftertaste. On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium in body with a nice sessionability about it. Carbonation feels good for the style and for me. Its sticky, but not cloying. Overall, this is a pretty nice Double/Imperial Pilsener. I’d have it again.

Pretty good imperial pils. Pours a hazy golden straw color with 1 finger white head..

Smell is mostly malt with very little hops or yeast coming thru..

Taste pretty much matches the smell, not much going on here in the complexity department..

Good drinkable beer that is a little sweeter and less hoppy than I was expecting from lagunitas .

Would drink again but wouldn't go out of my way to find it..

On tap at Sunstreet. Pours a clear dark yellow color with a very white head. Smell is crisp pungent noble hops with biscuit aromas. Taste of crisp floral noble hops flowery hoppy notes mixed with biscuit and cracker malt a sweet caramel intervention on the finish. mouth feel is crisp and dry with floral light bitterness in the hops, some boozy aftertaste. I like my pils turned down this was to boozy for a drinkable refreshing lager it was however worth a try.

I picked up a bottle of Lagunitas Imperial PILS for $4.99 at The Lager Mill. It's been a little while since I've had a Imperial Pilsner and I thought I would give this one a try, so lets see how it goes. 2015 Vintage. Poured from a brown 22oz bottle into a snifter.

A- The label has a nice clean look, but it isn't too eye catching. It poured a fairly clear golden orange color which took on more of golden color when held to the light with almost two fingers worth of a creamy off white head that died down to a thick ring that stuck around for a while and it left only a little bit of spotty lacing behind. This is a pretty nice looking beer, but i wish it had better lacing.

S- The aroma starts off with a slightly higher amount of medium sweetness with the hops being the first to show up and they impart some green hops, tropical fruit and citrus rind hops aromas with a slight bit of floral and spicy hops showing up in the background. Up next comes the malts which impart a pale malt and light sweet malt like aroma with a little more hoppy aromas showing up towards the end. This is beer has a pretty nice aroma, it's what I would expect from the style.

T- The taste seems to be similar to the aroma, but more robust and it starts off with a medium amount of sweetness with the hops still being the first to show up, but this time they impart more of those fruity aspects with some nice pineapple, citrus and green hop aromas showing up. Up next comes just a slight bit of doughy yeast and they are followed by the malts which impart the same sweet malt and pale malt aspect that they did in the aroma. On the finish there's a slightly higher amount of medium bitterness with a nice and hoppy aftertaste. This is a good tasting beer, I like the hop profile.

M- Fairly smooth, a little crisp, medium bodied with a medium amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel is good and it works well with this beer.

Overall I thought this was a good beer and good example of the style, it had all the aspects that I look for in an Imperial Pilsner and nothing felt out of place. This beer had nice drinkability, the full bottle is a perfect amount for me. What I like the most about this beer is the hop profile, it's very nice. What I like the least about this beer is the aroma, a little too much green hops showed up. I would buy this beer again if they release it again and I would recommend it to anyone interested in an Imperial Pilsner. All in all I thought this was an overall good beer and it was just what I wanted for the style. it's not a favorite Lagunitas beer, but it is one of the better Imperial Pilsners I've had. Good job guys, this is a pretty tasty beer.

pours a clear, dark golden straw with a large head. nose; orangey hops & sugar. taste; sweet bready malt, grassy hops, pineapple, lemon pith, & sugar. medium carbonation & mouthfeel. a touch sweet, and should be an imperial ipa i'd think. quite a bit hoppy & malty for a pils!

Imperial PILS pours a golden color, with a small lacing head. A bit of a skunky aroma, with big hints of booze. Taste is strong, has a corn like flavor, full of adjuncts, with a warm alcohol aftertaste. Tastes like a strong bud. Decent feel and body. Overall, its a big boozy Budweiser like beer.

Clear, golden yellow color with a small, short-lived head. It smelled of floral, fresh picked hops. It really had a grassy/floral hop bite with a sweet booziness in the background.

Probably should be classified as a double IPA, but who cares. This is delicious. One of my favorite offerings from the always dependable Lagunitas. Get it if you can.

Had this on tap at mellow mushroom. Color is a transparent gold, with a good looking slightly off-white head. Aroma is bready with hops and a whiff of pilsner malt. Flavor has the biscuit flavor, but unsurprisingly theres a good deal of hop flavor that I wouldnt expect in a pils. Mouthfeel is pretty good considering the alcohol content. Overall, I liked it...it just didnt really taste like a pilsner

Appearance: Pours a crystal clear, yellow-hued body with a medium-small, white, foaming head.

Smell: Pilsner malts with a little oxidation showing and hoppy hints of citrus (leaning a little orange) and some herbal-toned hops.

Taste: Pils malt, still a bit sweet and still hinting at some oxidative sherry-like tastes. Citrusy, orangey hops, even, with a bit of spicy dried herbs and some bitterness to temper the sweetness upfront. Drying in the finish, though some sweetness does remain, and, when hitting those hops, touches on some orange marmalade.

Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Medium-plus carbonation.

Overall: I will always say taking a refreshing style and doubling/imperializing it does not make it twice as refreshing, but, still, it thankfully didn't veer into an area that was too sweet, too hot or too gloopy in body. Still, I'd so much rather drink their basic PILS than then this.

I'm drinking this in December, so I know it's not the freshest, so I'm taking that into account. 22oz bottle poured into a tulip. Pours a light golden with great transparency; fluffy eggshell white head that sticks around leaving great retention and sticky lacing. Bubbles racing upwards. Looks awesome. The aromas are hop forward, but the hops come off as a bit stale. Like I said, I'm taking age into account. Tons of orange. Hints of caramel malts. It doesn't really come off as a pilsener based on the nose, but we know how Lagunitas does everything with hops. The flavors are crisp and refreshing. More orange. Citrus notes pop. It doesn't remind me of a pilsener of any kind, but it doesn't really remind me of an IPA of any kind either. It's pretty unique. Alcohol goes completely unnoticed. Mouthfeel is great. It's medium-bodied and feels light with active carbonation. Extremely smooth and easy to drink.

This is an enjoyable beer, but I will have to revisit it again when it's fresher. It's still good as is. I'm only taking the age into consideration because of Lagunitas and their use of hops. At the end of the day this didn't remind me of a pilsener, but it's still a nice brew.

This is a great beer. Abv well hidden. Bomber bottle into a glass jar.Best part about this beer right now for me is the mouth feel. Crisp. Very pils in the end , with the floral biscuit type bite. Taste is really good as you drink it you feel you could possibly really drink this kinda fast after a couple swallows. Almost too easy to drink, then it hits your stomach. I love imperial style or higher abv type beer but , sometimes stomach does not . They can tend be heavy, not the case here, at least for me. Heavy but not too much. As it warms now the flavors really pop out.Its super clear too. Lagunitas always kills it in the style they brew. Very laced out too. Small perpetual carbonation. As I drink this I crave NACHOS, OR MILD SPICY CHICKEN WINGS. great BAR food pairing beer. Some sort of spiced or peppery sensation when drinking this is why I say that. Lagunitas never disappoints. PRICE point and style for this brewery is always such a great treat . Peace and chicken grease!

Appearance - pours 3 fingers of bright white pillowy cumulus foam, body is a transparent and almost glowing golden yellow, steady carb rises thru the center - this is a glass of sunshine.

Smell - has a nice pils smell, light cracker, light earth and minerals, then on the back is a light vanilla caramel sweetness and mild tropical fruit.

Taste - wow! This is a delicious pils kissed with a tropical IPA. The pils flavors are spot on, crisp thin cracker, mild earth full of minerals, finishing with an herbal mix of dried parsley and white pepper - and there is this barely perceptible ribbon of semisweet malt and light tropical fruit in the background - so complimentary and complex, this is delicious!

Mouthfeel - a near medium, nice weight for the abv, the flavors are very full, but the medium carb keeps it light feeling, and there are just enough edges to scrub the tongue and keep these bold flavors from becoming overly assertive. Finish is wonderfully peppery and bitter.

Overall - I will pick this up every chance I get, and so should you. A phenomenal pils with the subtlest IPA influence lurking in the corner. Typical of Lagunitas, yes. But no other brewer could pull this off and still have such a correct and convincing pils. I love this!

On-tap 11/13/2015 at Doherty’s Ale House in Warwick, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a large foamy white head that fades slowly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains lager yeast, caramelized malts, some citrus and some hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of lager yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. The hops presence is on the weak side for the style but brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, good representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a while.

Beautiful golden color with generous white head. Laces incredibly well down my stein as I drink it down. Nose is tepid with some floral elements and a sort of metallic quality. Faint herbs. Boozy on the palate, with some dry cracker and gentle fruit flavors. Finishes with a bit of heat, and alcohol-booziness on the aftertaste and after-breath.

Bright yellow in color with excellent clarity. Poured with short, dense, creamy, bright white foam with good retention. Medium pilsner malt and soft floral hop aromas. Surprisingly no boozy notes. Medium light bodied with medium, soft carbonation. Medium pilsner malt flavor up front followed by medium floral hop aromas through the middle. Medium hop bitterness on the back end followed by a smooth, warming booziness. Balance leans toward the malty side as the hop characters are competing with the booziness. Seemingly simple and incredibly balanced. Finished cleanly with lingering bready malt and boozy warmth. An easy drinking imperial with smooth pleasant boozy warmth. Sadly, this is not available year round.

Pours a clear gold with a foamy bone head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of citrus fruit, citrus zest, grass, floral, and slight skunk aromas. Taste is much the same with candied citrus zest, grapefruit juice, and pine needle flavors on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice mix of hop qualities all around, but I would not guess this is a pilsner based on the aromas or flavors.

Serving type: bottle.

Pours a straw color and light golden with a big foamy head and thick lace.
A pleasant floral aroma predominates. Also, mostly sweet and malt forward in the nose.
This is a sweet malt forward brew. It is sweet to the point of cloying, which drops the score slightly, however, there is a strong hops presence which balances it just in time. The finish is especially hoppy, spicy and leaves a bitter aftertaste that is appealing.
Smooth and creamy. Fuller in the mouthfeel and not crisp and light like a regular Pilsner. Overall I liked the feel although the bigger body had a syrupy quality that drops the score slightly.
Overall, I did like this one. It is tasty and pleasant. It is very drinkable and I did not notice the alcohol. It is a good beer that misses a 4 score by a little. I will have again.
