Tasting notes from May 4th, 2016. Had On-tap at Lagunitas Tap Room in Petaluma, CA
Appearance - Served up in a 10oz Lagunitas jar, the brew is black with brown edging and a thin, broken layer of tan suds.
Smell - Aroma hits on roasted malt, chocolate, vinous fruit and a hint of smoke.
Taste - Chocolatey base with lesser roasted quality. A bit of caramel. Fruity red wine character comes through mid-taste, with notes of dark berry, grape must, oak and a hint of vanilla. Finishes with a touch of roast, chocolate and berry tartness.
Mouthfeel - Full-bodied with tingly carbonation. Finishes mostly dry, and leaves a tingle on the tongue.
Overall - Interesting brew. The zin wine barrel influence is certainly prevalent and works well with their Imperial Stout, adding a layer of complexity and making it a better beer overall.
