Brown ale... hoppy brown ale... sour brown ale... whisky barrel aged hoppy sour brown ale is the latest stop for the WTF for a serious w. t. f. mindset that adds complexity and intrigue for Lagunitas' journeyman of an ale for a taste that adds as many rewards as it does contradiction.
Rusy, ruddy, brown and bronze, the Willetized WTF rolls out with a tall swath of sepia foam that precedes a waft of old woods, cocoa, pepper, tangy stone fruit, whisky spice and a host of spicy plastics. A low lying toasty sweetness scurries across the tongue carrying with it notions of cola, pecan and steely caramels.
A wide swath of complex flavors unfold on the middle palate as the sweetness quickly breaks apart and the fruity sourness rushes onto the tastebuds. Cider, cherry, green berry, red berry, lime, sour grape and prune all seem to reveal themselves with subsequent sips for a challenging but clever set of complexities. Spicy and synthetic-like, the taste of oak soaked whisky leads to an unsettled late palate of vinyl and linoleum.
Medium light in body, the beer's toasty, brown character registers a richer sense of texture because of its bolder taste. But the sour, spice and heat of the beer's chemistry keeps the palate light, acidic and crisp. Unfortunately, that long finish of synthetics and phenolic spice prove to be too much for a second glass.
