Style: American Pale Ale (APA)

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 4.60%

Availability: Limited (brewed once)

Notes / Commercial Description:
We had a Joint Session with our friends at Short’s Brewing in Bellaire, Mich. to create this smooth and drinkable 4.6% ABV West by Midwest Ale. With some passion fruit juice added for that pleasant summery-ness and rounded off with a special zing of lemongrass, it’s best imbibed with your ‘buds … it’s good to have friends.

I was recently at yet another doctor's visit to Hershey Medical Center & since my uncle had to take me up since it was a late-afternoon appointment & public trans had shut down for the day, we had wheels. We made a short detour on the way home to Brass Rail Beverage in Campbelltown where I picked up a buncha singles before heading home. This is one of them.

From the Bottle: "West by Midwest Ale Brewed with Lemongrass and Passion Fruit"; "This ale was brewed, bottled, and released together in Joint Session with the Lagunitas Brewing Company, Petaluma, Calif. & Chicago, ILL. and Short's Brewing Bellaire, MI. Why? Well, a wise woman once said, 'Friends are the family you choose' … It’s good to have friends."; "Life is uncertain. Don't sip!"

I began by Pop!ping the cap & giving it a C-Line pour into the awaiting glass. This raised just under three fingers of dense, soapy, rocky, bone-white head with good retention, leaving loads of sticky lacing in its wake. Color was a gorgeous Golden-Amber (SRM = > 5, < 7) with NE-quality clarity, enticing The Gelt Gang of Midas, Mammon & Croesus to rouse themselves from my living room couch & come running into the kitchen for a taste. We had spent the day watching college football, MLB playovs & NHL hockey, but now some drinking was in order. Nose reminded me of a cross between a 5 Cs American IPA & a Tropical American IPA - lemon & grapefruit blended with passionfruit. Hmm. Mouthfeel was medium. The taste was more tart than the nose had led me to expect. It was far more lemony than tropical fruity and there was not enough of a hop presence. Why do I mention this? The standard bearer for the style is SNPA & this was nowhere close to that beer. I understand the disappointment that others have mentioned in their reviews. This had real potential, but it was a swing & a miss, IMHO. Finish was dry, but more tart than bitter. It was interesting, but it left me cold overall.

A - Pours a hazy gold with a two finger foamy white head. The head recedes quickly leaving a good amount of soapy lacing.

S - Aroma is passionfruit and lemongrass.

T- The taste is passionfruit, grapefruit, lemongrass, white pepper and grassy hops.

M - Light body with medium carbonation. Creamy mouthfeel with a crisp finish.

O - This is a decent session beer. Lots of flavor for a 4.6% beer.

Bottle poured into a Lagunitas mason jar

A: Pours golden amber with a frothy off white head that settles to a firm layer and leaves some light lacing.

S: Tropical and stone fruit, citrus, a little piney and grassy, crackery malt, and a touch of sweetness.

T: Bright, citrus, lemon, grapefruit, and a hint of tangerine, nice fruity side, passion fruit, apricot, and faint mango, grassy herbal notes, resinous pine, crackery malt, and just a touch of sweetness.

M: Light to medium body, moderately lively carbonation.

O: Not exactly the beer I would expect from a collaboration between these two, but for a light session sipper it's quite nice.

L: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a golden yellow color and a slightly hazy consistency. There was a half inch of foamy, fairly long-lasting head. Not a whole lot of lacing, though.

S: A decent, but not great, aroma of hops, tropical fruit, citrus fruit, malt, and pine.

T: Tasted of a small amount of malt (barely noticeable), a bit of citrus fruit (orange), a tinge of lemongrass, light pine notes, a moderate amount of hops, and some tropical fruit (passion fruit, mango). This flavor is kind of all over the place. The tropical fruits aren't quite strong enough in places, while the hops seem to take over. Still, it's light and effervescent.

F: A decent amount of carbonation with a dry finish. Light-bodied.

O: Not my favorite Lagunitas beer, but not bad, either. Worth a try.

The lightly hazed golden beer pours out into a Duvel glass with a 1/2” foamy white head that recedes slowly but visibly to become a thin irregular island of foam on the surface while leaving some modest lacing on the sides of the glass that eventually become just a few spots of lacing. Sipping creates a couple of arches and a few scattered small patches of lacing.

The aromas are mostly about the passionfruit and lemongrass which provide both a tropical fruit and a citric zest character. In the background there’s also a bit of crackery malt along with a touch of resin.

The flavors are much as expected from the nose with the lemongrass and the citric notes mingle nicely with the passion fruit. A bit of sweetness from the malt helps to balance the resinous bitterness.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied and fairly prickly with the active carbonation. The finish begins as the sweetness and tropical fruit fades away to be followed by the lemongrass, the citric zest and the resin. The ending is dry and still tinged with the lemongrass and resinous bitterness.

This is a drinkable beer that I would have again if offered. But for me it’s a one-and-done beer and I probably wouldn’t have two in a row.

Lagunitas Brewing Co. / Short's Brewing "Passion Grass"
12 fl. oz. brown glass bottle, coded "207 8 2 3058 1016" and "16818A10755"
$2.49 @ Roger Wilco, Pennsauken, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: Slightly hazy golden body beneath a two-finger thick head of off-white foam. The aroma is unusual, and enticing. I get the passion fruit but not the lemongrass - oh wait - maybe not, it is there, OK, and I also get an herbal note that's a little like cannabis. There's some other tropical fruit there as well, guava, mango, etc. I'm loving the aroma, I could just sniff at it for a long time. I hope the flavor is just as good, let's see... eh, unfortunately not. The passionfruit is generally lost to me until the finish, it's there but it's not strong and it has to compete with some other citrusy flavors. Most importantly I find it pretty bitter for what it is. The lemongrass is alive and well in there though, and it carries through to the finish where it's wittled down to just lemon and less grass. Well, there's some grassiness in the finish as well, and some citrus pith, but not like the note of lemon that kind of pops. Behind that it becomes almost tea-like, and that never really leaves the palate. The malt is grainy, and gently sweet, offset by the bitterness. It's OK, but not as good as the aroma would lead you to believe. In the mouth it's medium-light in body and crisp with a fine-bubbled median carbonation. I think with 5, and maybe even 10 IBUs less this could be a winner but as it is I find it out of balance, and even more so given the impression created by it's being a passionfruit and lemongrass beer. Not their best, both Lagunitas and Short's.

Appearance : Basic pale ale, nice light color and white head that doesn't last long at all.
Aroma : Very Hoppy, tropical fruity hop aroma.
Taste : delicious Pale ale, fruity tropical hop flavor is prominent with some lemongrass in the back. Passionfruit flavor is very light.
Overall : its not what i expected, much lighter in passion fruit and lemongrass than i expected but its a delicious pale ale LOTS of hop flavor and the bitterness is perfect not harsh at all. Big fan of this i just feel that it looks like it would be stronger with the lemongrass and passion fruit flavor. Also not sure how old this is so some of the bitterness might've settled along with aroma.

I'm not an IPA fan by any means and when I picked this one up that wasn't what I was expecting since it wasn't described that way on the packaging. I was hoping for a nice tart yet sweet, almost hefeweizen or even a sour. One sip and it was just like every other bitter IPA I've ever had. If I had known what to expect I might've been a bit more lenient on the rating but being surprised in a bad way by the taste really turned me off from this one.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 7/26/2018. Pours slightly hazy medium golden yellow color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and fluffy off white head with great retention that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a fair amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of lightly tart/tangy passion fruit, lemongrass, tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, cracker, white bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of passion fruit, lemongrass, citrus/fruity/tropical hops, and moderate pale/wheat malt notes; with great strength. Taste of big lightly tart/tangy passion fruit, lemongrass, tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, cracker, white bread, herbal, and floral/grassy earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/zest, herbal, floral, grassy, spicy bitterness; and slight fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Lingering notes of tart/tangy passion fruit, lemongrass, tangerine, grapefruit, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, papaya, mango, melon, guava, berries, citrus peel/zest, light pepper/pine, wheat, cracker, white bread, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of passion fruit, lemongrass, citrus/fruity/tropical hops, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance, and no astringent hop flavors after the finish. Fairly crisp/clean finishing. Light-moderate increasing dryness from bitterness. Medium carbonation and light-medium body; with a very smooth, moderately bready/grainy/sticky, and slightly acidic/resinous balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 4.6%. Overall this is an excellent fruited session IPA. All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of passion fruit, lemongrass, citrus/fruity/tropical hops, and moderate pale/wheat malt flavors; very smooth, crisp, clean, and refreshing to drink with the mellowly bitter/drying finish, not aggressive. Very flavorful and not watery for the ABV. Feels like Galaxy hops to complement the passion fruit flavors. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops/fruit; nice pale/wheat malt backbone for the ABV. Minimal residual sweetness. A very enjoyable offering, and great session style example as expected.
