Collaboration with Short's Brewing Company

We had a Joint Session with our friends at Short’s Brewing in Bellaire, Mich. to create this smooth and drinkable 4.6% ABV West by Midwest Ale. With some passion fruit juice added for that pleasant summery-ness and rounded off with a special zing of lemongrass, it’s best imbibed with your ‘buds … it’s good to have friends.

Bottle from the Boise Co-op. Pours out a hazy golden with an ice cap of creamy head. Big fruity aroma, mostly Citrus, lemons, and hints of tropical. Taste is more of the light lemony notes. A bit dry but very refreshing.

this is better than it ever got credit for being, done with shorts in michigan, as there was some joint ownership there, some cooperation, neat collaboration. a simple session pale type base, done with passion fruit, lemongrass, and some amount of hops that support that tropical vibe. the lightness is impressive, i feel like everything lagunitas is so big and bold most of the time, something a little more in the ripper category is cool, and i think the flavors present as authentic, compatible, and reasonably dosed overall, this is fun summer beer, fruity but dry enough to be drinkable in high volume, not sure why this does not have better ratings here. maybe a little more malty in color and body than it needs to be, a little brassy there, but its still light to drink, on the dry side, and distinctive. the passion fruit is in front of the lemongrass in aroma and flavor, but its appreciably herbal and citrusy too. definite tang from the passion fruit almost teases this being a kettle sour or something, clean lemon on the finish too, sort of muddled and fresh to me, almost cocktail-esque. i dont think this is intended to be the most complex beer in the world, its simplicity works in its favor for me, and i like the way the extra ingredients go together. i also like the base beer not being just a blonde or golden ale, there are some hops and indeed a little grain character to the base pale, and some hop bitterness on the swallow adds some intrigue. maybe not for everyone, but its not out of place and it works with the late lemongrass rush. a hot weather cruiser, maybe not quite executed up to its full potential, but better than i think it got recognized for being...

Bought this beer just for fun and was surprisingly turned out to be great drinking beer. Light ABV and very easy to drink makes it a refreshing beer but with a great citrus fruity aroma and the passionfruit & lemongrass give it a great taste. The first time I drank it gave me a grapefruit taste sensation. Overall very good ale.

A very nice, light, refreshing ale made from a collaboration between two great breweries. Smooth, crisp and flavorful. Pours a nice slightly hazy darker golden-yellow color with some nice looking fluffy white head and spotty lingering lacing that lasts. Smells of nice citrus zest and piney hops, along with some weaker floral hops, malt and vanilla. Tastes of lots of nice fruit - grapefruit, pineapple, lemon and orange. The piney, grassy hops are there in the forefront and the muted malt, caramel and vanilla is more in the background. It’s a little hard to discern the passionfruit and it may just be muddled with the other citrus flavors. Smooth, thin, mild mouthfeel with good carbonation. A very drinkable, easily sessionable pale ale.

This was a beer I only bought a single 12oz bottle of because I was wary it would suck. Happy to say it exceeded expectations. Pours a mixture of yellow and light orange. Really am not sure what the color of passion fruit is. This had a small 1/4" white head on the top. Aroma was fruity.

Taste immediately struts a proud lemon and wheatgrass character. Its big. And I actually like it, didn't expect that. You know, Shorts does a real good job with off the beaten path kinds of beers. Being that Lagunitas has had more misses than normal lately, I'm glad Shorts was a part of this. The passion fruit juice gives it a dallop of sweetness to balance the lemongrass notes that remain plentiful the entire time. The timing seemed weird for this one, its very much a summer beer, but it seems it didn't show up out here until we were well beyond the season it would be best consumed in.

Very light body, well carbonated stuff. I dunno, if its 90 or above, I could see picking up a 6 pack.

Well it's not terrible you get mild if any passion fruit flavors and mostly dry lemongrass mixed with pale malts and whatnot. It's pretty tasty and goes down smooth but its stout season so it's kind of meh...
