Bottled 3-23-26. Last reviewed back in 2012, so a re-review is in order with this latest 2026 release.

Golden amber. Nice lacing and retention.

Smells citrusy, piney, resinous and bit tropical fruity. Has the Lagunitas "house aroma" that a lot of their beers have.

Flavor follows the nose. Bitter grapefruit pith/peel...Finish has a lingering piney, dankess mixed with some juiciness, maybe a bit floral too....very bitter, super dry, bitterness lingers... Malt does what it can to keep things balanced with just a bit of sweetness but it is dominated by hop bitterness...Medium feel, smooth body.

I'm glad Lagunitas re-released this and hope they do the same for other beers that have been shelved in recent years...

Pours a clear gold. Thick foam. Hoppy aroma. Big hop resin body. Straight up west coast. Earthy. Bitter finish. Excellent. A classic banger.

Pours a clear gold with a two finger white head. Aromas of pine, citrus, and tropical fruit. Taste is strong hop flavor with citrus, resin, and light malt sweetness. It's an assault of hops. It goes tropical citrusy hops to malt, to bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium-bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, it is a hop-forward ale with high bitterness and enough malt to support the hop character.

So glad they finally made this beer again! Just a classic double west coast. Minimal head and mild grapefruit/piney smell. Great pine and citrus on the taste. Drinks rather easy for 8%. A steal for $10.99 a six pack.

Look: deep gold, clear, nice creamy head, left good lacing rings

Smell: pine, resin, caramel malt, grapefruit

Taste: pine, resin, grapefruit, tangerine, citrus rind, piney bitterness

Feel: med body, lower carbo, dry

Overall: 8% abv. This is old school for sure. Starts piney and resinous. I like it! I can taste the grapefruit and tangerine which is a nice compliment but fades out. Wonderful citrus rind and piney bitterness on the back end. Strong concentrated pine and resin seem to beat down any sweetness but with that being said, this brew drinks quite easily. Only ordered 2 bottles but will buy more IF/when I see it in my area. Hope I do. This brew pairs well with Hey Stoopid by Alice Cooper. Cheers!

Look: It pours golden and clear with a white head. Head retention is good.

Smell: It has stone fruit aromas with touches of citrus and pine.

Taste: The alcohol is noticeable with stone fruit and pineapple flavors up front. There are also some low citrus elements.

Feel: It has a medium full body with strong bitterness in the finish.

Overall, a thick strong alcohol beer with mostly stone fruit favors.

The 2026. It poured a white, frothy head of almost a half-inch into a Spiegelau glass. Good lacing.
Dank, grass leavings nose.
Pine malt is the first flavor note. There’s caramel inside the taste bubble. Fresh dankness.
Thin mouthfeel with throat bitterness in the finish.
I almost forgot to say, good color of clear gold that began life in the glass as hazy and opaque.

Pours a darker clear yellow with a medium white head on top. Smell is of hops and tropical fruit. Taste is not tropical at all. Very hoppy with notes of pine.

 

Slightly hazy copper color with a dense white head and some nice lacing. The aroma is pine, citrus, bready caramel malt.
The taste is grapefruit, tangerine, a trace of lemon, a punch of pine resin over some fresh bread and light caramel, vaguely sweet, tart, definite bitterness but not overpowering, dry finish.
The body is medium/full, good carbonation, smooth, well hidden but appreciated ABV, dangerously drinkable.
Altogether, this is a tasty and enjoyable hop bomb, could work with hearty fare but best just to sip and enjoy, very well done.

Pours a clear copper color with dense fluffy head. Earthy forest floor aroma. Slightly sweet citrus upfront followed by a pleasant grapefruit tartness. Great malt backbone. Moderate mouthfeel with a dry finish. Light carbonation. Overall, excellent!

A - Dark gold pour with medium carbonation and a dense, frothy one fingered head that cements to the side of the glass.

S - Lightly toasted bready caramel malt aroma with some earthy resiny lemon, floral, and grapefruit citrus over top.

T - Bready caramel malt base up front but quickly gets knocked down with a wall of slightly resiny citrus while morphing into an aggressive citrus / piney bitter finish the lingers for awhile after the finish.

M - Big thick medium body with lots of tight and light prickly carbonation fighting through the viscosity.

O - Rock solid, just as I remembered it to be (not as resiny as I remember also).

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Pint Glass, it is a light amber, 1/2 finger slightly off white head, with strong active lacing which continues. A decent amount of sediment accompanies this. Nose is bisquit, bread, and hops.

> Hops are the focus here, and they are Centennial, and perhaps a couple of others; mostly Centennial. It is bitter, but not really a palate killer. It is a full body drink which has a lot of mouth feel and more complexity than most DIPA's I find these days. There is Solid Pine, Orange rind, and Resin bite in this. The back end is bitter and sticks around for a little while, which I can really get behind.

This is not Ruination, so don't look for that. It's similar dry though. Also this is not juicy at all, so don't expect that. It is not chewy at all, but there is a lot of body (bread) to this beer. The combination of hops and body might put some casual drinkers off, however I really appreciate it.

Note: I have not had one of these in over 10 years, and so I remembered it being one of my favorite drinks. I can't tell if they changed the recipe, however, to me this used to be comparable to Pliney (elder). Today I don't feel that comparison can be made. I appreciate the effort, but to me the hops seem to be more subtle than I remember. This is an easier drinker than the 100 IBU would indicate.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into shaker glass. It is a pretty honey color with a half finger cap of fluffy, milk-white foam and soapy lacing. The smell is bready malt, and notes of lemon and grapefruit. This stuff is great! The taste is simple but effective with sweet, bready malt, tart lemon and grapefruit, and biting hop bitterness. It has a full, creamy mouth feel with appropriate carbonation, and the 8% ABV gives it good substance but allowing for a second (or third) pour. Overall, Hop Stoopid is, if the phrase exists, a sessionable Imperial IPA. It is a fabulous beer for the price point. I wish it were available year-round.

Re-reviewing this one as my last review is now 14 years old.

12oz bottle (“032326” stamped on the neck, so about 5 weeks old) into a tulip. Pours a clear golden-amber color with a big frothy head that leaves behind copious chunky lace.

Aroma is loaded with resinous pine and citrus—classic West Coast all the way. Grapefruit rind, tangerine, dank juicy hops. Smells wonderful.

Taste is likewise resinous and juicy with an assertively bitter finish. This is what I’m talking about. The hops are layered on top of a foundation of dry biscuity pale malt, allowing them to shine. Wonderful crisp alpha acids tickle the palate.

Mouthfeel is just on the heavy side of medium and you can tell this is a big beer. But it’s so tasty and drinkable you barely notice, which is what makes this 8% imperial IPA dangerous.

Overall pretty much what I remember. If there’s one thing I expected to be different it’s probably the sweetness—I recall this being just slightly sweeter than what’s in my glass (and no, I didn’t look at my previous review because I didn’t want it to influence my perception). But it’s just as delicious as ever and I’m glad they are making this again, even if runs are limited.

22oz bottle (code 07636319 - no idea what that indicates) into a tulip. Pours a perfectly clear, coppery orange w/ a thick frothy head, minimal carbonation.

Aroma is all tropical citrusy piney goodness. Resinous and hoppy, clean and bright.

Taste is, of course, sharply hoppy and bitter. Pine resin, grapefruit. On the malt side there's a dry, biscuity pale malt presence along with just a note of sticky honey sweetness that provides a good counterpoint to the hops. There's some alcohol warmth too, which adds to the flavor profile but never becomes overbearing.

Mouthfeel is a little sticky, medium-bodied. Lingers on the palate, doesn't evaporate.

Overall this is a solid go-to DIPA that I don't buy often enough. Would love to see this one in 12oz cans.

Aroma - bright pineapple, pine resin, papaya

Taste - sweeter at first than expected. Sweetness doesn't linger but is quickly overtaken by the hop flavors of resin and grapefruit pith that does linger. Tropical notes come through slightly, but it's the pith taste that lasts. Oh ya, it's hoppy
