Finally hit the TN market 7-8 weeks after bottling (which kind of defeats the purpose), and I remain dumbstruck at the discontinuation of Born Yesterday, but I was still excited to try this beer. Nice burst of floral and fruity hops when the bottle cap came off, and the look is pure, beautiful BY gold with a chill haze, so I allowed myself to get excited. Then reality hit — just not on par with BY. I’m sure some of that has to do with the age on the 4-pack I bought. But this is clearly not the same product as the hops involved don’t provide nearly the same breadth and depth of citrusy, fruity, piney, weedy glory that made BY one of my all-time favorites. To be fair, this is still a pretty excellent fresh-hopped beer and if it wasn’t having to live in BY’s shadow my appreciation for it might be higher. But the aroma is just a little flat and the flavor profile is muddled and strikingly dry (would have really liked to try a fresh glass to see how different the taste profile was intended to be), so it (the beer I’m drinking) just doesn’t present as a top wet-hopped offering.

October 2021 OneHitter Release - 4 pack
12 oz. bottle dated 278 1 (10/05/21) - 7.7% ABV / 50 IBU
Brewed and bottled in Petaluma, CA
Poured into a Bell's branded nonic pint glass

Look - Pours a fluffy white head that settles down pretty quickly. Slightly cloudy, golden yellow appearance with a fair amount of carbonation.
Smell - Picking up a lot of tropical fruit and citrus in the scent. Pineapple, coconut, mango, guava, and also some earthy wood pine undertones.
Taste - The taste is mostly sweet citrus and peach. The flavors all fade pretty quickly and are hard to discern. Bitterness and alcohol taste are both minimal.
Feel - Medium bodied with a juicy and wet mouthfeel. Minimal dryness. This brew really warms you up, surprisingly, with the ABV not being super high.
Overall - Not bursting with flavor as one might suspect, but the flavors are good, and this is easy to drink.

I was beyond excited to try this one and finally got my hands on it.

12oz bottle poured into a wide-mouth tulip.

Looks - golden. Pretty honey-like. Hazy, but not as cloudy as a proper hazy IPA. Has a small off-white head, but still leaves good lacing on the glass. Bubbles are tightly clustered in the head.

Smells - Interesting. Almost identical to their Hoppy Refresher. Very citrusy with tropical fruits like pineapple come to mind. A hint of grassy hops and earthy pine, but mostly dominated by a lemon-lime and delicate pineapple note.

Taste - Citrus-forward. This brew is juicy through and through. Citrus forward tastes limey with a hint of tangelo, again akin to the Hoppy Refresher. Semi-sweet malt in the middle with pineapple before leading into a finish of spicy pepper and a semi-dry finish.

Feel - very smooth. Silky and medium-bodied. Not too effervescent, but still enough tingle to add texture to your tongue which enhances the flavor experience. Goes down easily. Doesn't feel heavy in the stomach. Flavors and feel linger on the tongue just long enough before dissipating.

Overall, I love this brew. One of my favorites in the OneHitter series. It feels fresh as the name describes. It's very refreshing. It's super easy drinking, masking alcohol perfectly. Like I said, I found a lot of commonalities with the flavors in the Hoppy Refresher, and that is a good thing. I only wish it would stay a bit longer, or at least they gave us packs bigger than just 4! You'll be left wanting more for sure.

12oz bottle, no freshness date visible to my eyes. Opened 11-21-21.
1 finger white head, mix of large and small bead. Falls to 1/4" and holds.
Golden IPA with slight chill haze.
Bright aroma with sweet orange, lime, and sherbet in the nose. Light woodsy note (Sabro?) and faint mint. 4th bottle (11-26) nice pineapple note.
Orange and coconut, some tart lime. Creamsicle note.
Light body with medium carbonation, Moderate bitterness in a medium length dry finish.
Very good.

Pours an effervescent gold with a pinky of pearl colored head. Above average head retention & better lacing

S: Peaches, strawberries, mango, nose fades a smidge down the stretch, but still great

T: Oranges, lemon, pineapple and strawberry, with just little floral & grassy hop up front. Pineapple, dryness
& grassy notes as this warms, just a touch of pine, a little dryness & cattyness too. Finishes piney with oranges, strawberry & a little grapefruit

MF: Medium body, slight carbonation, nice balance

Probably one of the best fresh hop beers I've had in a while, super drinkability despite the heft

I was all set to pass on this (I've passed on most new Lagu brews in recent years) until I found out this was more or less replacing Born Yesterday (perhaps my favorite IPA ever). Unfortunately that lag probably cost it it's freshness as this was bottled on 10/4 (assuming I'm properly decoding Lagu's archaic bottle dating) and it's now 11/20. Not that a month and a half is old by any stretch, but this beer's whole deal is that it's supposed to be uber fresh. Oh well, enough rambling.

Pours a very clear pale gold with maybe a pinky finger of eggshell white foam. Lots of carbonation bubbling up from the middle of the glass with a few dribs and drabs around the margins. Not sure I've ever seen that before. Maybe it's the glass. Either way, not the prettiest beer I've ever seen, but not a hazy eyesore either. Perfume-y hops are hitting my nostrils before I even raise it to my nose, so I reckon age hasn't dulled things much. Sweet malt and lemon hops combine to give a Lemonhead candy vibe. There's also a little grape, some pine, perhaps even a little peach. There's a lot going on, but it's not exactly blowing me away in the smell department. Smells pleasant enough, though. Taste ramps up the peach and overall stone fruit vibes. Grape is still there, too. This is fruity in the way NE IPAs are fruity, but it has enough heft to pull it off without being a watered-down mess. Sweetness and hop bitterness dominate the finish, but it's not a tongue-scorching palette wrecker or anything. Wow; this way over-delivered from what I was expecting based on the nose. It's not Born Yesterday or anything, but then not much is. This is a winner on taste alone.

Born Yesterday light? This certainly reminded me of BY, but sort of fell short of that beer on every level. Fresh hops on the nose, but slightly muted compared to what I expected from this, which is priced quite a bit over other Lag releases and even higher than BY if I recall. Flavor is the same story. A really good beer with good fresh hops flavor, but slightly muted compared to expectations. I don't know if this is really this year's replacement for BY, but they need to rethink if it's true.

12oz bottle. No dating information found, but labeled as a '2021 ONEHITTER RELEASE'.
Mostly clear, pale gold colored body. Thin finger of white head upon pouring, but this quickly subsides to a partial cap. Leaves one incomplete ring of lacing.
Aroma is dense with fresh hops expressing citrus, pineapple, honey resin, and peppery grass.
Taste has a flavor more akin to honey pine, along with citrus, pineapple, melon, and spicy grass. The grass and resin trail off in the aftertaste.
Just a little thinner than medium mouth feel. Has some real pepper spice effect on the tongue. Good carbonation.
Very expressive as a fresh hop beer, and quite peppery too.

41 days old
Smell of pine, citrus
Hazy golden, amber tinged color
Medium mouthfeel
Medium carbonation
Taste of pine dominates, some citrus, bitterness is at a good level where it is not overly biter like some IPAs
Overall a great IPA. You can taste the freshness. This is what IPAs should taste like.

Poured from an 12oz brown bottle with an illegible date code to a Nonic at fridge temp.
Impressive white head sits below a light-gold body with nice nucleation (almost Pilsener-like).
The aroma is AMAZING. Its like a feedbag of fresh hops.
Taste a nice west-coast IPA with a hop bang in the front and finish with a hint of the malt.
Mouth feel is slightly oily with medium carbonation.
A good beer worth the hype.

12oz undated bottle.

Pours clear yellow with a faint chill-haze. Moderate retention and lacing. Dank and fruity in the nose. A bit grassy with a chlorophyll hint. Medium bodied with a soft mouthfeel. Cracked garlic with grapefruit and pine on the palate. Finishes with minimal malt or bitterness and fairly dry.

The label says this is a "fresh hop" beer but on the bottom of the 4 pack carrier it describes the usage of undried hops which is a "wet-hop" beer. Either way, tasty stuff but a four pack of 12ozrs for $13.00?

Hazy this, bitter that, hop heads can fuss all they want about what the best display of hops are. But the purest essence of hops occurs in the wet-hopped or harvest ales. Picked at the peak of plumpness and sent directly to the brewers before being dried and processed for long term brewing, this freshest hops give IPA something that's only experience in a short late fall season.

Lagunitas capitalizes on the moment with Contents Under Fresher; a honey gold ale that celebrates a medium hop-derived haze. As a frothy crown forms on the rim, the fresh, green and citronella character of plump hops come with a strong herbal, hemp-like and peppery grass quality. As a sweeter tone gravitates along the tongue, the early impressions in flavor are of honey, honeysuckle and the lightness of angel food cake.

But once those hops spring up, there's no stopping their flavor. With the malts in retreat, the floral, spicy and herbal scent turns extra green with suggestions of cannabis, green tea leaf, lemongrass, parsley and peppery arugula. Nearly dirty in it dankness, the peppery and earthy hops dive into a bitter finish with a chlorophyl filled juicy greeness of micro-greens, pine sap and a hint of tar.

Medium bodied and on a drying track, the beer's resinous dryness ensures a crisp and refreshing but off-clean sense of drinkability that extends in a dank aftertaste of grapefruit, citron and dried pineapple rinds.

12 ounce bottle - $4.49 at Total Wine & More in Kennesaw, Georgia.

Appearance: Pours a bronze-yellow body, a bit of haze to it and a smallish, foamy, whitish head.

Smell: Pineapple and melon chunk infused water, cedar-coconut, pepper-studded citrus with a little herb and peach hint.

Taste: Crackery pale maltiness with a nominal, subtle sweetness. Spiced citrus, tropical, melony with that loathsome Sabro giving us tastes of cedarbox shavings and suntan lotion. Restrained bitterness. Fairly dry, thinning finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body. Medium carbonation.

Overall: We're really not turning back when it comes to Sabro, right? Wonderful news. Just wonderful.

Appearance - Pours with a slight haze, golden yellow in color with a white, half finger width head. Fair retention before dying to a thin, broken layer of suds on the surface. Not much for lacing.

Smell - Fresh, citrusy aroma with a bit of pineapple, green leaf and some pine.

Taste - Follows the nose. Orange, lesser grapefruit, pineapple, a bit of green leaf and some earthen dank. Finish continues with the citrusy notes, and almost a smokey character .

Mouthfeel - Medium-bodied with fair carbonation. Slick, smooth drinker before a lightly dry finish.

Overall - Pretty similar to the Born Yesterday, except with a smokey finish that oddly fits, somewhat.

Not a fan of Citra hop in any form and Sabro I could take it or leave it so I entered into this with a bit of trepidation. Thankfully for me this beer is more herbal, stone fruit, and citrus with less coconut and rotting orange. Mild dankness with no cattiness. Overall a nice tasting wet hopped beer.

Bottle from Market of Choice.

A clear orange with a dense off-white head with excellent retention and lacing this looks great. The nose is super fruity with mango, pineapple, a mild coconut note from the Sabro, overall a very tropical IPA with a mild fresh hop character. The palate opens very fruity and ripe, a blend of mango, coconut, pineapple, some peach, all in a cooked fruity way. The amount of fresh hop character is actually minimal. Sweet, fruity, coconut heavy, melon. Honey. Mildly watery, finishing bitter with lots of coconut.

L- pours a very slight haze on a golden orange. A thin, white head that leaves slight lacing.
S- A wonderful smell of candied citrus hops. Melon, orange and tangerine. Slight lemon lime.
T- light malting combines with sweeter citrus and Sabrina hops. Just the right amount of bitterness that allows focus more on the wet hop than malt. Very slight onion and garlic especially on the back end. Also a little pepper and hop grit in the finish. Very good.
M- Very slight sweetness and bitter hop on a medium, crisp mouthfeel, typical of Lagunitas that I like.
O- this is not as good as Born Yesterday, but a great beer on its own.

Slightly hazy golden color with a creamy white head that laces the glass nicely. Dank citrus notes, with tangerine and pineapple most prominent, and there’s a bit of coconut as well on the nose.

The taste follows, with the citrus delicious and balanced by the subtle coconut flavor courtesy of the Sabro hops. Truly delicious, IMHO.

The mouthfeel is dry, per the WCIPA style. This beer works really well for me.

Good-looking pour, classic IPA slightly hazy and light amber. Not much of a head, filmy lacing. Nose is faintly floral. Taste of fresh / wet hops is subtle but still comes out in the finish. Bitterness is tempered, even to the point of drifting into Pale Ale territory. Overall, a good job (it's Lagunitas, after all), but it lacks the up-front hop presence of the real Fresh Hop crowd. Living in a spot halfway between Seattle and Portland means we're at Ground Zero for fresh hop beer, so our standards are pretty high.
