On tap at Bier Stein, Eugene, OR. 10.21.2010,.

One finger white head, quick dissipation with average lacing. Dark amber body, a bit of chill haze, the color is a bit light for the style, no visible carbonation. Nose is pretty malty a bit of resiny hops. Taste is malt-forward, not much hops until it warms. Mouthfeel is medium, decent effervescence, a bit sticky. Drinkability is ok, but I didn't think this was hoppy enough. To be honest, my least favorite Lagunitas beer to date, in need of a serious hop infusion, which is a surprise for this brewery.

Poured a murky dark amber hue with a one finger foamy off white head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a balmy caramel malt with a secondary citric hop.

The taste featured an upfront full malt with roasted malts and s touch of caramel. A nice cleansing herbal hop appeared toward the finish.

The mouthfeel was toward the fuller side of the style.

Overall a tasty malt driven IPA.

Had on tap at Blind Tiger in Manhattan, NYC. Ah yes, the Cascadian Dark Ale.

A: Dark as one would expect with a rather swirly head.

S: A distinct Tomahawk hop aroma - slight onion, peppercorn and garlic.

T: Underwhelming. Distinct Tomahawk hop flavor...and that's about it.

M: Creamy. Great carbonation and smoothness.

D: Not complaining here - it was pretty watery.

As usual, Blind Tiger brings the rarities.

On tap at EJ Phair in Concord. Served in a pint glass 09/06/10.

Body of the beer is a shade or two lighter than many so called India Black Ales (or whatever name for the sub-style you prefer). Very dark brown with slight garnet hues. Medium sized light brown colored head is fairly well retained and lacing is very nice.

Citrus hops aroma blends in well with an almost nutty and toasty malt profile that stops well before becoming intensely roasty or astringent.

Toasted malt and hazelnut notes are even stronger here than on the aroma. Floral notes are the most distinct hop character but everything else is hidden among the other flavors until the bitter aftertaste. This one comes off as more of a hoppy brown ale than an IPA in my opinion.

Nicely done beer but the IPA tag isn't doing it any favors and may create some disparity between expectations and reality.

On-tap at Lagunitas

A: The pour is a brown tinted amber color with a mild off-white head on it.

S: Quite a good nose to this beer, with plenty of bright, citrus hops up front, along with a touch of tropical fruit. Underneath are mild roasted and toasted malt aromas.

T: Not surprisingly, things stay essentially the same on the palate. Good pine and citrus hop flavors, providing a controlled bitterness. The malt flavors are again subtle, giving the beer just a bit of roast.

M: The body is medium with solid effervescence and a hint of bitterness on the finish.

D: I must confess, the name of the beer frightened me for a bit (especially considering some of the beers that were concurrently on tap), but this was actually a pretty nice beer.

On-tap at Flying Saucer served in a tulip glass and reviewed from notes. Served a deep almost opaque black that showed ruby highlights when held to light. The beer was topped with a decent light tan head that diminished to a ring and left some lacing at the top of the glass but none after that. The aroma was nice dark malts with a slight roastiness alongside some nice earthy hops. The taste was a very delightful balance of roasted dark malts and pine hops, very flavorful. The beer was medium bodied, smooth and crisp with nice mild carbonation. This was a very enjoyable beer, one I would love to have again, hopefully it will not be a one-off brew.
